Direct Hero Duels: Why so bad and how/can they fixed?
So, it's known duel mode is imbalanced (direct duel, not duel maps).
My question is quite simple:
What are the most imbalanced builds?
Which are the weakest ones?
Can the Hero Duel be balanced, or is it completely broken beyond repair?
In my experience, barbarians rule and wizards are weak, while rangers are very strong (automated special targets many opponent's creatures with imbued arrows), but those were my observations many years ago.
I would say there are ways to balance it, but first I want to hear every opinion before saying how.

Long time ago I made a MOD to replace all official Presets by Level 20 Heroes, you can try it HERE.
The balance was certainly not perfect, but that's still way better than the original Presets.
(That MOD includes few new Arenas.)

THe duel mode, that's why I said "direct hero duels" :v
Where you choose the creature stacks, etc...
I will take a look at that.

Those one are broken beyond repair.
first you pick a preset hero which probably can be very bad or too OP.
They have artifacts which you cant change and some of them use. not to mention again some of them are OP.
Even if we disregard those 2 things above the whole system attack/defense vs spellpower/knowledge is completely broken.
I would suggest an arena map to be made that is suitable for HoMM 5.5. This way you get the all the hero/creature/artifact balances by default. What needs to be done is to decide on the amount of weekly population, the hero level, the initial gold given which will be used for artifact purchase by players before battle and probably to set terrain and battle sites.

Coudn't modding actually change those things which you "can't change"? I mean, I haven't tried, but we got a hugely upgraded AI, as well as the upgraded random maps, and many other modded things. Are you sure hero duels can't be fixed trough scripting, hex editing, or programming?
The problem with "week growth" balance would be not being able to freely choose the creatures, meaning you are restricted to default proportions which kills the purpose of freely choosing your army.
Much better would be to give unlimited growth but only a limited amount of money to buy it.

Stack proportions can greatly affect balance - especially when you consider spells, skills and hero specials. For instance Haggash with an overgrown centaurs stack
But imo the true failure of the duel mode was the inability to have different skills, spells and artifacts each game. Also the inability to take into account racials like academy or sylvan. Even if the current version was perfectly balanced it would have gotten old fast.
That's why maps like arena or duel map were created, to address the parts that were missing from the duel mode.

Sylvan racial is actually automated/randomized and OP in duel mod. Academy racial is somewhat randomized, creatures have artys, you just can't choose them.
And my point was: Even these things probably have ways to be edited that give more control, via injecting code, scripts, editing of game files, etc.

Yes, creature proportions can affect things, but that is the point, isn't it? To have a DIFFERENT game experience, not just the same one.
That is what I would like to retain, the ability to choose army composition. Not to have the same old "7 stacks one of each level fight", but to be able to have a Golem + Gargoyle full buiold, or whatever, without being horribly underpowered.
Yopu already have the "week growth of equivalent all creatures" in the same game. What if I want to see how would a gremlin/steel golem combination fare competitively against an army of goblin trappers? Which army composition is the best? That can be an art as much as "hero building" is. And you can't see that in the main game, because, unlike hero skills, you don't get much choices as to which creatures you focus in...
Choosing armies is resource allocation rather than "week automation". Creature specialty heroes could easily be disabled.
