I know exactly what some of you mean when you say that AOW 3 and EL don't scratch the same itch as Heroes. I can only reemphasize my recommendation on Eador: Genesis or preferably the free Eador: New Horizons Mod which I linked on the first page of this thread.
In my opinion, those also capture the "feeling" of older heroes games to a certain extent.
I've seen quite a few recent discussions about the differences between older and newer Heroes-games on this board. To me, the main difference seems to be in art direction and general atmosphere. That difference is indeed a huge one. Heroes 5 was actually my first Heroes game and I didn't play Heroes 2/3 until a few weeks ago. I was blown away by how "pure" those games feel, like lost childhood memories. Also, there's a certain touch of class in them, in comparison to which the newer Heroes-games feel like a Skrillex-song interrupting a Mozart concerto. That difference in the general feeling of the game is the only reason which I can see why someone who likes H2/3 would not like H5. As for that atmosphere, here's another recommendation which is completely different gameplay-wise: King of Dragon Pass. A highly intelligent CYOA-RPG. There's also an element of strategy in it, but on a very different level than actual strategy games.

Chaos Reborn.
Oh yeah, I just remembered something:
http://store.steampowered.com/app/319050/?l=english
Here is a video of gameplay.
This is quite an interesting title. If one would ask me I would compare this to Etherlords. But with more of a Heroes-type battles (hexes, so moving through fields, but with 'cards' and creatures summonable with spells). From what I've seen they've added a campaign mode, a single thing that the game was lacking, but because I tried the game some time ago I didn't expierience it myself and the campaign does look a bit 'Heroes-ish' to me...
PS: Oh, and sth rare, there's even a demo for the game to try on Steam!
PS 2: Psst, it's a game from the XCOM creator Julian Gollop...

Mlezi said: New or old, no preference. Mainly just looking for the names of the games, and a screenshot or two.
Hey folks! As of now I do LP reviews over all these obscure HoMM clones and turn-based strategies in general, since nobody else documents them. Interested? Search Heroes of Malgrimia and Nancy Sadkov. Apparently I'm the first person to do English commentary on Malgrimia.
