what are the most important tools/tricks for a mapmaker?
Besides the standard tools ERA provides. Is there a better map editor for example ? What are some tricks and secrets ?

Map editor. Unless you learn how to make good looking maps in standard SoD map editor, any other tool is not needed.

The map editor from ERA(the standard install) doesnt have all the features other map editors have. Thats why i was asking specifically for tools. I wonder if there is a patch or newer features. For example the era editor cant copy whole terrain features.
I played all your maps Salamandre, however Im not clever enough to finish them all... you where one person that inspired me, your maps are amazing.
I am reading trough the mapmakers thread on the other subforum, many advice there. Searching now for threads and posts that deal with era/wog mapmakking... few of those arround, at least i didnt find them yet

The Era editor can copy/paste terrains, I used it in tew4. And it has all you need, thats what I used as well.
And I wasn't referring to my maps, as I use intensive erm coding and this is not visible in editor. But maps as tew1-2, unleashing the bloodthirsty, to kill for power, vengeance is mine, they contain all tricks and designs one need to know. Then later if you specialize, try Biobob maps, however they are too hard for me.

Thanks for the tips! Been playing many great maps lately and have learned a lot..
1)I have one more related question, can campaigns be edited to give more options ? I want to edit the campaign map itself and make it bigger and customised...
2)Also, what is the dialog editor from ERA ? Cant figure it out...
Edit:
3)Also, is there an easy way to edit specific battles? Without ERM magic ? For example I fight 10 creatures in a battle I want to edit like these examples:
a)the stack is divided like this: 2 creatures/8 creatures
b)5 / 5 with one upgraded
c)10 1 creature stack, do more than the maximum number...
Also, specific battlefields and obstackles... can it be done with era easily ?

Using ERM is no magic, it just takes some time to understand the concept. I will try to give you an easy example how to change every fight on your custom map with ERM. It will give you much more choices for map making.
First you need your map. Go create a test map an place some dendriod guards at a random position. Lets say you want to change the numbers of dendriod guards with ERM.
Now you open ERM Editor from Era Start Menu and create a new empty file and copy paste the following inside.
------------------------------------------------
ZVSE
*Dendriod Soldiers at Arena*
!?OB61/102/1;
!!VRv9150:S10;
!!IF:V836/1;
!?BA&836/v9150=10;
!!BA:M1/1/23/6000;
!!BA:M1/2/23/6000;
!!BA:M1/3/23/6000;
!$OB61/102/1;
!!IF:V836/0;
!!VRv9150:S0;
------------------------------------------------
All you need to do now is change the coordinates at which the event happens to the ones of your creatures on your map. For that you go to your test map and click at the dendriod guards and look at the coordinates at which they are placed. You can see them on the left and at the top. Left is X position and top is Y position.
Now changes the numbers from this line:
!?OB61/102/1;
to your coordinates:
!?OBX/Y/0;
The 1 means its in the underground of the map. 0 means its on the surface.
Do this for both !?OB and !#OB lines.
Now save the file (give it any name) and place it in your mods folder.
Use the following folder structure:
D:Games/Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Complete/Mods/Monster Grow Trigger/Data/s "your name.erm"
You can take a look at other mods and see how the placed the file.
You need to activate the mod with Mod Manager.
When you now start your game and attack the Guards you should see at least 3 stacks which have a number of 6000.
So if this worked you can start to play around a bit with numbers and stacks.
only make changes to these lines:
!!BA:M1/1/23/6000;
!!BA:M1/2/23/6000;
!!BA:M1/3/23/6000;
i will briefly explain the numbers:
!!BA means BATTLE ATTRIBUTES (BA), so it makes changes to battles
:M1 means M:Set the Monsters that are fighting the battle. 1 for defender side
/1/ means the battle stack
/23/ means the monster type, in our case the dendriod guards
/6000; means the set the numbers to this value
now go ahead and play around with the last three numbers and watch the changes in game. Its a good way to learn.
If you go ahead and try this out and want to learn more i can write more. Because this is just the most simple script for custom maps. Not recommendet for AI or other stuff.
A much deeper and better explaination can be found here:
