A matter of definition.
Currently working on a snap-coursework - 'What challenges did Historical Figure X face in securing his position in Region X? Key word here being securing, within the context it could be used as either/both as a synonym for acquisition and/or for consolidation (I opted for both as that gives me the greatest wealth of resources to use). Since this is uni the responsibility for defining key term(s) falls to me (or whatever academic sources I choose to do that), but I can see room for contention so I'm wondering what others think.

Both makes better sense to me since it also shows how the location came to be under their control to begin with. But I do not believe that focusing on either would have been a mistake.

That may be true, but upon further consideration I cannot even work if it's anything but both since I'd have no starting point, every challenge overcome continually produced more challenges that coincidentally spawned from the nature of the solution to a prior challenge.

The sentence is kind of redundant because 'securing' implies eliminating challenges. The sentence basically reads "What challenges did this individual face while they were in the process of eliminating challenges"
