To be honest it’s always good to have a chance to farm interesting epics. Water elemental is really good, maybe better than light one, especially in dungeon defense. I’ll farm four ones to be completely awakened.
The map offers a multitude of creatures to farm, robots and owls, ornithopters and the like.
Not to mention the chests that are said to contain diamond idols.

Diamond and colour idols. I got yellow one yesterday and diamond idol today.

True, and you never know how the meta will evolve, also it never harms to fully awaken Epics for Kingdom structures.

is it me or is the difficulty spike pretty high on emperor compared to other quests? The model of the 'boss' is really cool though and pretty often the map has a cheap golden market wagon too

The idols seem to only drop from the holiday chests (the gaudy golden ones), which seem to be random. Got three of those chests on one run, zero on next.
Might even be worth restarting the map if the first chests are regular ones.
Edit: This was a nice map. Completed it about 60 times, managed to get a 4d Water Elemental (and more than enough dupes to fully awaken it). Also got a couple of legendaries from the idols. None of them really useful, but still.

I fully awakened two and kept a few 3 dots just in case. They seem to have increased 3 dot drop rates at least. Every other or third drop was a 3d, while I remember previous events 3 dots were one in every 10-20 drops.
