do you like your national anthem? how does it make you feel?

i heard our national anthem(the version we currently have is the first-verse version) some minutes ago, and despite what i know about the purpose of national anthems and my views towards everything going on in the u.s. and how most of the populace is lacking in that old-school american feel, i got jazzed up. feels good, man. i think it still serves to remind what being an american(the old-school, hardier version, anyway), is all about. and i can't help but feel proud that i was born in this country.

i know national pride means nothing worldwide and we're all the same species and all, but despite that, i actually feel good as an american when i listen to our national anthem(the horn version probably pumps me up even more than the vocal version). for some reason, it gives me hope that we can return to the strength we once had as common people.

the star spangled banner in its entirety (not a fan of the soft singing in this version, but i'm adding it because i was unaware that it even lasted this long)

the best horn version i could find

and of course,

jimmy hendrix's version.

here are the lyrics in their entirety. obviously, it was a smart decision to cut everything but the first verse(the third verse especially. it was definitely another time, when this was written).

The Star Spangled Banner

O say can you see, by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hail’d at the twilight’s last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight
O’er the ramparts we watch’d were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there,
O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore dimly seen through the mists of the deep
Where the foe’s haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o’er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream,
’Tis the star-spangled banner—O long may it wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore,
That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion
A home and a Country should leave us no more?
Their blood has wash’d out their foul footstep’s pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave,
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

O thus be it ever when freemen shall stand
Between their lov’d home and the war’s desolation!
Blest with vict’ry and peace may the heav’n rescued land
Praise the power that hath made and preserv’d us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto – “In God is our trust,”
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

The Hungarian makes me sad and depressed, but it's solemn and beautiful capturing the very essence of a Hungarian imho.

While the English anthemn is all over the place (god save the queen), it's out of touch imho with the lyrics. I vow to thee my country/To my country thee I vow (patriotic anthemn) should be made are national one imho, it's beautiful and contains all the qualities of a true English (note the English, not British) citizen.

Sadly the two likeliest replacements are either 'Land of Hope and Glory', or 'Jerusalem' (debated in parliament).

To my country thee I vow:

Quote:
I vow to thee, my country All earthly things above Entire and whole and perfect The service of my love The love that asks no questions The love that stands the test That lays upon the alter The dearst and the best The love that never falters The love that pays the price The love that makes undaunted The final sacrifice And there's another country I've heard of long ago Most dear to them that love her Most great to them I know We may not count her armies We may not see her King Her fortress is a faithful heart Her pride is suffering And soul by soul and silently Her shining bounds increase And her ways are ways of gentleness And all her paths are peace

we should post links to the best original versions, and the words to our national anthems, so that others can hear/read it if they haven't already.

(of course, fan-versions are cool to post, too. i'm gonna post hendrix along with the 2 originals, lol)

Will take a lil while to translate, so I'll just update this post once done. Okay nm, for some reason all the actual songs only have a single verse in them lol. Also I must include the national song by Petőfi Sándor (though it's more of a poem, and read like that too rather than sung) a man's whose works I had to learn off the top of my head at the ripe old age of 6.

Quote:
Talpra magyar, hí a haza!
Itt az idő, most vagy soha!
Rabok legyünk vagy szabadok?
Ez a kérdés, válasszatok!
A magyarok istenére
Esküszünk,
Esküszünk, hogy rabok tovább
Nem leszünk!

Rabok voltunk mostanáig,
Kárhozottak ősapáink,
Kik szabadon éltek-haltak,
Szolgaföldben nem nyughatnak.
A magyarok istenére
Esküszünk,
Esküszünk, hogy rabok tovább
Nem leszünk!

Sehonnai bitang ember,
Ki most, ha kell, halni nem mer,
Kinek drágább rongy élete,
Mint a haza becsülete.
A magyarok istenére
Esküszünk,
Esküszünk, hogy rabok tovább
Nem leszünk!

Fényesebb a láncnál a kard,
Jobban ékesíti a kart,
És mi mégis láncot hordtunk!
Ide veled, régi kardunk!
A magyarok istenére
Esküszünk,
Esküszünk, hogy rabok tovább
Nem leszünk!

A magyar név megint szép lesz,
Méltó régi nagy hiréhez;
Mit rákentek a századok,
Lemossuk a gyalázatot!
A magyarok istenére
Esküszünk,
Esküszünk, hogy rabok tovább
Nem leszünk!

Hol sírjaink domborulnak,
Unokáink leborulnak,
És áldó imádság mellett
Mondják el szent neveinket.
A magyarok istenére
Esküszünk,
Esküszünk, hogy rabok tovább
Nem leszünk!

(Pest, 1848. március 13.)

My translation:

Quote:

On your feet Magyar, your land is calling!
This is the time, now or never!
To be slaves, or to be free?
This is the question, now answer it! (plural)
On the god of the Magyars we swear,
We swear,
We swear, that slaves we will be
No longer!

We've been slaves up till now,
Damned by our ancestors,
Who rode and lived free,
In the earth trod on by slaves they can't rest.
On the god of the Magyars we swear,
We swear,
We swear, that slaves we will be
No longer!

Homeless stray man,
Who now, if need be, would not dare to die, (sacrifice her/himself)
To whom a ragged life is more valuable,
Than his home's (country is synonymous with home) honour (do note that honor in hungarian encampasses things like dignity, and integrity).
On the god of the Magyars we swear,
We swear,
We swear, that slaves we will be
No longer!

The sword is shinier than the chain,
It better decorates the arm,
Yet we still arm with the chain!
To me, my old sword!
On the god of the Magyars we swear,
We swear,
We swear, that slaves we will be
No longer!.

The Hungarian name will be beautiful once more,
Worthy of the great glory of old,
What the hundreds have smeared on us,
We will wash off the shame!
On the god of the Magyars we swear,
We swear,
We swear, that slaves we will be,
No longer!

Where our grave mounds are,
Our grandchildren will worship,
And beside blessed prayers,
They'll call out our saintly names.
On the god of the Magyars we swear,
We swear,
We swear, that slaves we will be,
No longer!
/quote]

There are numerous little tidbits that I did try to bring on into the English translation, most important is the reference to the Hungarian god, even after a thousand years of fervent Christianity some still remember our old god that led us to the land of milk and honey, and they key to recapturing the essence of old lies in shirking the lie of catholocism and regaining our noble one faith. Apollo still watches over us.

Now for the actual Anthemn gimme a sec (tanslate the first verse as it's all that;s included in the song, will come back later and add the rest):
Quote:

Isten, áldd meg a magyart
Jó kedvvel, bőséggel,
Nyújts feléje védő kart,
Ha küzd ellenséggel;
Bal sors akit régen tép,
Hozz rá víg esztendőt,
Megbünhödte már e nép
A multat s jövendőt!

Transaltion:

Quote:

God, bless the Magyar,
With a warm heart in abundance,
Reach out with your defending arm,
If enemies he has to fight,
Bad luck that has stricken us for long,
Bring us a brighter a future,
Our people have already paid for our sins,
For the past and future!

No. I don't like the musical composition. The lyrics are quality poetry in the technical sense, Mehmet Akif wrote the poem for the contest of a National Anthem during our independence war and his poem was voted number one unanimously. Technically, it's really good. But I have to much disagreement with the content to enjoy it, religious references, blatant nationalism, I mean, I get it, they were in war but it just doesnt relate to the way I dream of the world or my society. Back when I was a kid, on monday mornings, it was obligatory to sing it together in the school yard, I refused and told them I didnt like the lyrics (yes, I was a smart ass as a kid, too) but they kept insisting and didnt let it go, so I did playbacks all through my school years. Sometimes a teacher used to get closer to check if I was really singing and I'd give him the evil eye for it. In time, they settled for the playback, they thought of it as a victory over my openly rejecting to sing. Maybe, it was.

i don't remember so far back where we would sing the national anthem in school; i only remember saying the pledge of allegiance:

"I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

i never thought about it back then, as a kid. it wasn't until in my 20's that i actually started paying attention to politics and nationalism, at all.

you should post the lyrics and at least one audio version of your national anthem, artu; regardless of how you feel about it. i'm interested in hearing/reading them all.

Ye, this with the music though, the actual national anthemn just leaves you depleted imho, just makes me weep every time.

Anthemn

Then again this is what I truly believe, what White-crow wrote:

Tündérharang (Fairy bell toll) is the goddess, in the fire of love she burns man until he awakens.

Same with Hungarians, we are burned by bad luck and misfortune until we awaken at last.

Some of our more traditional songs (especially with drums and such), sound very Native American, even our attires. I think we as a human race have to rework the ground upon which we are based, and wash away the filth we have grown on it of thousands of years.

Song 1 Tepjen Szel - This is our home, we're staying, in my heart god's sun shines. Then it lists all the calamities we're willing to face, but our heart beats for home, so we will never abandon it, this is my home I am not leaving:

Song 2

They lived in peace and died brave.

With the blood of patriots have our life been maintained.

"Land of the free" was written about white men, only.

I appreciate what people feel about it in spite it's origin coming from a slave owner writing the song about slavery. But it's a shame they refuse to look at the truth.

Back in Romania, we had to stand up and sing it in school before classes, and I was very proud of - well we had to sing it face to Ceausescu portrait but we knew it wasn't about him. Also I find the Marseillaise a wonderful patriotic poem then the theme is very inspiring for improvising. The Casablanca scene brings me tears every time.

I absolutely despise the US national anthem.  First of all it's a crap melody, second of all the range is so large it's impossible to sing - which means it fails at its one and only job, which is to be something that all Americans can sing along to.  "America the Beautiful" is so superior in every way, shape, and fashion it makes me angry that all the artless, tungue dragging, knucktard politicians have maintained 'Banner' for so long.

re the UK, My Country I Vow to Thee is such a great song.  I wouldn't mind seeing it replace God Save The Queen at all.

Prolly my favourite anthem is the Bangladeshi anthem.  I always root for them at the Olympics.

Amar Shonar Bangla (My Golden Bengal)

My Bengal of gold, I love you
Forever your skies, your air set my heart in tune
as if it were a flute,
In Spring, Oh mother mine, the fragrance from
your mango-groves makes me wild with joy-
Ah, what a thrill!

In Autumn, Oh mother mine,
in the full-blossomes paddy fields,
I have seen spread all over - sweet smiles!
Ah, what a beauty, what shades, what an affection
and what a tenderness!
What a quilt have you spread at the feet of
banyan trees and along the banks of rivers!
Oh mother mine, words from your lips are like
Nectar to my ears!
Ah, what a thrill!
If sadness, Oh mother mine, casts a gloom on your face,
my eyes are filled with tears!

I know what you expect of me, and I won't disappoint.

The hymn to the king (Inno al Re) always makes me sad and proud at the same time, well, considering how history progressed it's no wonder that it would leave you feeling nostalgic.

I much prefer the instrumental version because it sounds more like a national anthem, although the sung version is powerful and solemn.

The instrumental version

Now, the text is a bit lacking, but what do you expect from an hymn to a king from the XIX century?

Having said that, the anthem I have to refer to is according to my mother an happy march, I have to agree, it's much more jovial than most national anthems.

Since Italy is de facto my country, I have to sing it every soccer game, otherwise we lose (at least, that's how it works according to tradition), although they thaught it in school we sang it only during the celebrations for the 150 year anniversary of Piemontese occupation the Unification of Italy.

Other occasions in which I sing it is when I'm with friends drunk/sober in foreign cities just to piss off the locals, or let's face it, when I want to piss off a stranger.

Because this anthem is also a celebration of defeating the stranger, and unlike Germany's it's perfectly fine to sing it in full length (although we do abridge it during sports celebrations, otherwise they would probably kick us out), and what's better than berating a stranger after invoking the might of the legionary cohort?

This part in particular is offensive though:

Quote:
Dall'Alpi a Sicilia
Dovunque č Legnano,
Ogn'uom di Ferruccio
Ha il core, ha la mano,
I bimbi d'Italia
Si chiaman Balilla
Il suon d'ogni squilla
I Vespri suonň »

"From the Alps to Sicily, everywhere is Legnano, every man has the heart and hand of Ferruccio, the children of Italy are called Balilla, the sound of every bell sounds the Vespers"

Now, not only are they celebrating the defeat of Imperial forces in the first half, a political entity that we Sicilians have been aligned with until Napoleon did us part, but they are also appropriating the Vespers, when we kicked out the corrupt and tyrannical French from our island, even though we tried to do the same to the Piemontese. Also, the Balillas were also the Fascist youth but that's alright, the Fascists tried to use as much nationalistic symbolism as possible, we can't just reject our history because of politics.
