Armageddons

In previous games it was so fun to bring just a few Black Dragons with you and cast Armageddon all over the place.  Now that the heroes also fight in combat, each time you cast Armageddon you'll also kill your own hero.

Don't you hate it when game companies make those cool tricks obsolete?

Your hero can get magic resistance/immunity through various means so it's not obsolete.

100% . (Really, I just understood that that could make you think that I was joking) GM at the skill makes the hero almost like a black dragon, only twice as good because the hero can still have good spels cast on him.

Yes, but then you could cast armaggeddon only every 2nd turn because every 2nd turn in which you don`t cast it you would have to take another potion.

That's cool.  Better study Magic Resistance in the future...

Or .... could you just learn enough combat to become a Fireguard (since you already have pretty much maxed out the sorcerer side to be casting Armageddon in the first place) since I believe it's still a fire based attack? And will artifacts that give fire resistance protect you?

Yes, Fireguard will help. (And I suspect that it also protects against Medusa stoning, or I was exceedingly 'lucky' in the Chaos Campaign.)

Do recall that Magic Resistance also reduce the damage you take in the case you don't resist. So even if you don't have it at Grand Master you get a bit more likely to survive, depending on the damage done by Armageddon.

You also have the spell Antimagic. (Expert nature Magic needed).

If you can't cast it with your Armageddon hero, you may have another hero with you who can. A druid doesn't need all that many levels to get Expert Nature magic.

Ways to navigate through this inconvenience... ;)

Well, as I have obtained Heroes of Might and Magic IV in a quite recent period of time, I may not be as well educated as some others. I don't believe 10 hours of playing has sufficed.

On this topic of Armageddon, I can see a few ways to execute this problem.

The  attainment of the FireGuard class can easily overcome this problem. It is easily learnt by the Asylum Magic hero, the Sorcerer, at about level 4 at the earliest. As you know, it gives the hero fire resistance, and thus making him immune to fire-based incantations, such as the notorious Armageddon spell.

Yes, I would have though that magic resistance will have an effect on the effectiveness certainly, of the armageddon spell. Of course, there is a diminishing chance of armageddon affecting the hero if there is greater magic resistance. Still, it could be a risky move with only basic or advanced Magic resistance.

And as Djive mentioned, there is the ever-present antimagic spells, which can protect the whole army from the spell if mass antimagic is learnt.

Also, there is quite an easy way to get around the problem that no-one has mentioned. Possibly, late in the battle, the magic hero is worn, and there are only Black Dragons in the army as HappyPike mentioned, the Hero may choose to cast that spell as sort of a 'self-destruct' strategy. But, it would be enough to win the battle as his Black Dragons still survive. Although, that would only be used in extreme measures, as it would be quite a big event to lose a hero as powerful as that.
But on the other hand, the Hero may have been defeated next turn anyway, so, you won't be any wiser....

The armageddones isn't as powerful as it was on Homm III. I did have a hero with about 20 black dragons yesterday, my hero was immune to the magic I casted. So I casted Armageddon and killed everyone else...just like in
Homm III !!!
