I think Sal would perform metal songs on his piano if he would transform into me.

And now I want to hear an Ace of Spades piano cover.

Damn you kebab.

Now imagine that played by a dude of Sal's caliber in a philharmonic.
Would pay top dollar to see that.

FTFY.

In all seriousness, metal and classical music go like bread and butter. Mix them both, they still sound awesome. no other two genres can be mixed like that.

Don't know about that, my comment was purely technical. A philarmonia or a symphonic concert hall is usually under the administrations of a symphonic orchestra, and is not used to anything else than those orchestra's concerts - in theory, there may be rare exceptions if some special event. To not conflate with any standard concert room, which is rented for whatever you want, granted you pay the price(Champs Elysées for example). You can't rent a Philarmonia/symphonic concert hall, as its schedule is always full, shared between rehearsals and concerts of the owner orchestra.

Also I managed to listen a few minutes of Zeno's link and I am categoric: this is not metal music. My body is not nervously shaking, my cat didn't run away and I'm still able to hear our village's bells.

Choose freely: little Strasser, two media stars (madness varies), some beaten card from 90s, and three literally no-names. And Putin.
(I vote for this Strasser-on-the-lows thing, because I think that CPRF needs some bonus points for its creativity, but I voted only because I needed to buy food in shop near the polling station)

Problem is not directly in elections.

We shall not conflate politic ideology with culture. West is Europe and East is Asia, and the Russian core is geographically, culturally, and genetically in Europe, not in Asia. Also when we associate everything positive with the word "Western" we forget that it was not too long ago a host also to predatory and absolutist empires, right?

Russians have same values, family, friendship - even much stronger -, life values (no death penalty), gender equality, also freedom (although in some different perspective from west). Also highly nationalistic, but so we are and hardly trying to hide it; very corrupt, but so we are at astronomical levels and smartly hiding it, dreaming of a great empire, but so we are (EU, Nato) at some meta-national level. They have same shocking contrasts as we have: space programs and African corruption levels, can build nuclear weapons but not maintain clean public toilets, can produce scientific and artistic genius like no other, but also some fine examples of sadistic barbarism. What's so different once you debunk the propaganda painting the other as evil?

As said Solzhenitsyn once, be nice to Russia. Just because it looks like it cant build a road without craters for potholes, don’t assume you can speak to it with haughty airs. Russia is never as strong as it seems. Russia is never as weak as it seems.

Sorry this is a little late but while I got curious about blizz's edits after he got warned, I noticed I skipped this post at the bottom of the page, I was probably typing while the page changed.

Your categorization is quite arbitrary and flawed, Sal. Death penalty is not a parameter for any cultural aspect since by historical standards, it was here till yesterday for everbody, Americans still have it, Brits had it in the 50's, Russia had it in the 80's, we had it in the 90's... And loving your friends and family? Asians don't? Do the Chinese hate their mother, are Indians repulsed by their classmates? Nationalism? The Japanese or the Arab or the Israelis can also be very nationalist, they usually are. Love of freedom, when, and in which way? Putin is authoritarian and supported, you have communist dictatorship almost right before that, and then the Tsardom. By which criteria do you come up with these arbitrary generalizations? And you have this rhetoric like cultures are these monoblock entities determined by invisible borders.... Thanks to Petro's reforms, Russian literature and (classical) music is in European canon of course and the early "Rus" were children of invading Vikings and the local folk there but I can tell you first hand that their daily mannerisms are much closer to Easterners than Nordics. Or... A Greek and a Turk are usually much more alike than a Greek and a Dannish, in China, there are many cultural provinces and each consider themselves unique, where as to Huntington it is one culture, and to some, all "Far Eastern" is one big culture. Speaking of Huntington, do you know for instance, according to his monoblocks, neither your country of birth nor Russia count as "real Europe." Somehow, France and Texas are culturally "the same team," yet, the Balkans and Spain are separate cultures... And while I don't agree, I read his book, I can tell you his criteria is much more sophisticated and convincing than your "we love family and freedom." Cultures are interlinked and all of them transit and transform among each other within various degrees. There is not, and has never been a definitive final European culture, and there never will be.

Well so much for drawing nearly same conclusions as I did.

In case you didn't notice - sure hard with the soyflake editing 35 times and during 4 hours, muh - I was only giving a broader answer to some shallow generalization about America being at the top of "values" (the post above yours) then with Russia being at the bottom. So, in that perspective, yes, I specified russians are attached to the family concept, as almost everybody, they respect friendship, their women, freedom too. About Putin being authoritarian, well he is certainly not the sissy boy we have in Europe all around, but I would like you to give me an example of what you consider "authoritarian". He doesn't allow his opponents to express? So do we, with much more perversity: we invite them at some show then hire 10 leftists bulldogs to demolish them until last shred, while they can't place one word. "Democracy" respected, game over. Putin just spends less money for same result. Death penalty? it is at the top of arguments leftists use to define regimes and values they don't like, so why not, for once, specify that Russia, unlike USA, banned it? Is a good point for them, in the context, that's all.

And yes, cultures are interlinked to some degree, I believe Americans and Russians have so much to share and admire each other, is not ME who put them aside. But also some cultures resist longer at foreign intrusions, especially when the moral value of the intrusion overlaps with their. Call them conservatives, doesn't matter. Not everyone has to accept all the bollocks tumbling around, in order to satisfy his progressive "ego".

"The Clash of Civilizations" is a Hollywood science, it doesn't really reinforce a point or disprove another. At best, it's a dangerous oversimplification, full of knowledge gaps on top of all. It does however reflect certain geopolitical realities but that makes it more of an agenda than a study. I agree with the rest you said though.

As I said already, I dont agree with the book either and that "somehow" part you quoted is an example of why I don't. It was an interesting read though and the guy is a skilled writer. I actually think the impact of the book was more about his penship than the accuracy of his thesis.

Indeed, being a Western Catholic nation didn't stop France from allying with the Islamic Ottoman Empire against Austria (and thus the Holy Roman Empire) or from allying with Protestant rulers against Austria and Spain. Even the tribes sorrounding the Aztecs allied with the conquistadores to overthrow their oppressors, and I'll refrain from listing the unexpected alliances of the Eastern Romans or of the crusaders.

The Clash of Civilizations is something more modern, born from a Romantic view of history, but even then, are we really going to group Americans, British, Germans and Polish, under the same group? Such generalisations betray a too narrow view of history.

Btw, Sicilians are a stand-alone civilization if you were wondering.

Huntington su.. is very politically engaged, yeah.

Making a separate Latin American civ while combining Europe and America have even less sense than sepating this "Great West" and Russia; same, separating Japan from other Wenyan (Classical Chinese) area done probably more for political reasons, than for historical/cultural accuracy.
But Islam is described as one entity, from Indonesia and Kazakhstan to Mali and Yemen, awesome. More awesomeness comes only with unifing all of Buddhism, what cultures can be more similar than Mongolian and Thai?

Even Toynbee is more accurate.
