You've never tried both? It's best to get 100 feet, 150 for good measure.

so sad to see that no one else has said disc golf (frisbee golf, or frolf). When you're a beginner it's more like a hike with a silly little agenda. Once you get pretty good it becomes very engaging in and of itself, and is still a decent hike.
Also it's one of the most egalitarian sports i've yet to encounter...All sorts of folks from all sorts of walks of life
Are people at least familiar with this sport?

@Iris
I used to be crazy about archery when I was little. I made tons of walnut bows trying to replicate the great English longbows, but my bows never fired further than about 200 meters
I even tried drying the walnut trunks for half a year before making the bow and then tightly tying a flexible rope all the way around the bow, the power sort of improved, but I couldn't get anywhere near the insane range of the English longbows
145 skips per minute? That's not bad! I think I'll time myself some time just to see how many I can do.

A while back I actually spent some time trying to find out just what the range of the English longbow was (by reading). So I'm curious just how far does one shoot?

When I was little, I used to make bows out of toothpicks and rubber bands. ^_^*
And I checked myself yesterday. I'm down to only 133. But I can still do 47 continuous double jumps (where you jump once and swing twice).

How bout 5? Is it good? Cause it's what I can do in an hour, and I'm talking about girly jumps (no offence Iris) when one of your legs goes first and the second follows after. I have never been able to do skips the proper way, luckily I don't really need it playing basketball.

I may be off, but from my knowledge, the range was somewhere between 500-1000m, similar to the modern rifle's targetting range (except that, of course, you couldn't really target the arrows from the longbows other than sending them in a general direction towards your enemy ). What do your sources tell you? Any exact number? I am kind of interested to know that myself.

yup, it might have been around that, though the effective range was way less, around 50m or so.
I myself used to be kinda into archery many many years ago, but not really that seriously, so it kinda faded away.

What do you mean by effective range? Targetting range? Or the range where the arrows do the damage? Because even though an arrow with a steel tip falling down on you won't be as fast as when it is fired, it'll still be able to go through your body, maybe even pierce the light armor if you are wearing it.

Well, longbow had a long range, and was accurate, but it was not both at the same time. By effective range I mean the range you can expect to hit and kill something. And arrowheads were usually not made of steel, but iron.
