It's either Marius or Ignatius depending on the map size and preferences.
If one wants to gamble for a stronger main hero, pick Ignatius. If not then pick Marius, the start can be a bit rough but she is a solid main if one can demonfarm effectively.

Nymus for better Pit Fiends, which you need to keep alive to resurrect demons :V :V
Remember that specialty also gives +1 speed, doesnt it?
Rashka with Wisdom is also a fine choice if you want an spellcasting might hero, because he starts with Wisdom and Scholar. After all, spell power doesn't matter with blessings and curses. Efreeti are also powerful.

Voted Ayden,
I mostly play small maps, sometimes medium ones but never large-xl maps due to several reasons. I am not too patient to wait too much time before battles between factions. His Intelligence skill helps a lot I think in small-medium maps.

i voted for pyrre because she has logistics, although i never choose her at the start because i find fiona and octavia more appealing at the start.
then i usually grap the best might hero i get from the tavern to be my main hero.

From the height of my noobiness, Zydar is my favourite. Ok, actually, when I was starting out Axis was my favourite, because of his portrait, tho Zydar also had a special place. Then I realized that Sorcery made your spells stronger, so yeah, Zydar all the way for me.
I still think that sorcery builds are great for casual play. Flame me.

Zydar is also good! Primary skills for strategies belong to Zydar, because of 1/1/2/1, and you collect powers. The best example of death knight have 1/2/2/1, you develop to defense and power, when necropolis is weaker team, if you give for defense and power, necropolis becomes stronger team. If you give up defense and power, and you take a attack and knowledge, so necropolis never become strong. It's rule! Ok then Zydar has sorcery, it does mighty hero him! Remember power or knowledge, you take a power powertube! Ok my random map/game came Zydar, I developed to 3/2/9/7 in 2 months and his skills are wisdom, sorcery, fire, and offense when skill shares pathfinding, I know that fire, and I updated sorcery. I didn't taken pathfinding, I know also it comes back. I know the system well. From now on you can collect skill by the secret. Why not test? About Cleric, I develop to attack, power, and knowledge. So 10/0/20/20 Zydar gets 10/10/20/10. Remember also artifacts, and free bonuses (e.g. marletto tower), etc
EDIT Now Zydar has 35/51/59/39, and his implosion does 9904 dmg! Zydar kills in about 99 creatures in 6 level or in about 40 in 7 level. I played implosion, and demon farming with Yes in about 38/38/59/39 You know that artifact, if you're brainy! The best is talking heroes than some guy explains things, or better still s/he don't like about sorcery Remember what? I said Zydar is good.

I kind of suck with Inferno, so I rarely play them. BUT, leaving aside the usual snowty skills (artillery, learning, etc.) that some of the best heroes in the game start with I would say Inferno have some of the best heroes in the game. I think there's at least 4-5 heroes that I could play as my main at any given moment, so it was kind of hard to choose one as being the best, especially assuming that this poll only refers to vanilla versions of HOMM. Because, if we are talking about WoG for example (which is the only version I've played in the last decade)... well, nothing beats rashka
I still picked rashka, though, because... well, level 6 creature specialist. If game is dragged into month 4-5 and beyond no other Inferno hero can match Rashka's power

Pyre is only good in early game and because she starts with logistics, but otherwise Marius and Rashka are the best heroes.
Personally, I like Rashka more because I never use demon farming properly, but... people who use demon farming properly will obviously say Marius is the best, and I can't argue against that
