Lots of articles have been written about it on the interwebs.
They're both successful, arrogant men who experience hardship and then emerge powerful.

Eh? You just described the origin story of a big chunk of heroes in comics. Rest are noble men like Steve Rogers or those who were made heroes by accident (usually by receiving some kind of power).
And I wouldn't call Iron Man extremely powerful. Yes, he seems that way most of the time, but bash his armor enough and he's helpless (look how many times he had a near death experience). Strange on the other hand has limitless powers and is able to manipulate time and space.
And if you're referring to things like "black sidekick" let me remind you that Mordo was originally a white male before Hollywood went s*it.
