Well I went in the opposite direction, in my game and made them much better. Also already gave them speed 4.

Why not replace them with any of the literally hundreds of units out there that could actually serve a purpose besides one-hit fodder?

My gold comes from the purest of sources. I would never dare allow the peasantry soil it with their grubby fingers. And any how do are executed immediately.

So you'd rather pick up change from the side of the road? Remember, peasants have monopoly on the guillotine business as well. No matter how many you chop up, they'll always be the ones to laugh in the end.

I would prefer that, peasants still feel pretty useless, but so does most neutral creatures tbh. (With the exception of Enchanters, Sharpshooters and Gold and Diamond Golems in certain cases and then of course the expensive dragons.)

New here and don't want to intrude but had to comment on this (though I've only played against the AI).
You're 100% correct and its why castle is my favorite. The Angels give you the initiative and with a magic based character like Loynis with max water/prayer you can destroy any chance of your opponent winning before the fights done a turn.
Personally for me prayer is more important then Haste but slow is also crucial as it can easily break up the opponents formation with a couple of fast units isolated from the heavy hitters which have lagged behind especially against the devils, fortress.... actually all of them.
Your marksmen are the bait and whether it be dragons, devils or any of the super fast creatures once they have pushed ahead a mass slow allows you to isolate their strongest creature and almost have a 7 vs 1 enabling you to remove the most problematic creature. Once done you resurrect the lost Marksmen and they're back in the game to decimate the creatures that are still potentially 2 turns away.
Absolutely nothing is more important then map movement speed. A character with two movement gloves, speed boots and dimension door can be a force of nature in the game and if you have town portal its absolutely unstoppable. You take towns to weaken the opponent against his own troops while using them as staging posts to expand and collect resources. If you are moving only 30% further its the same as having a free extra turn every three turns, almost all returns like gold and resources collected also multiply and these returns grow exponentially as the game continues.
I cannot think of anything within the game more important then speed.

Stacking identical Artifacts doesn't work; the game only considers one of them. This affects all Artifacts which can be equipped more than once on a single Hero.

I'm not so sure. My heroes seemed to move a heck of a lot further when they had two equestrian's gloves paired with the boots of speed.

With the HD Mod it's easy to check, I guess, since the HD Mod shows the total number of movement points a Hero has. But I admit that I don't know what the HD Mod affects, could very well also be that it ignores duplicate Artifacts on a Hero .
Ok, best test would be to quickly create a test scenario, empty field with three Heroes. One with two Gloves, one with just one and one without any Gloves. Then start up the game (without any mods active) and let each of them move into a straight line. If two Gloves stack, that Hero is able to move further than the other two.

I've made a testmap, RoE only, no mods of any kind. A Hero with two pairs of Gloves (no Secondary Skills, only 1 Pikeman) moves exactly as far as a Hero with the same configuration with just one pair of Gloves. The base game therefore already doesn't consider duplicates, aside from the Rings mentioned by Phoenix.
