Like Sal said, changing the rules screws up maps. If there was a map winnable by doing great at Necromancy (for instance to trade Skeletons for a powerful stack to stop an advanging enemy at seer's), Hota balance changes would make it unwinnable.
Thus, I like to play older maps in H3 HD, not Hota.

Doomforge seems like you are stuck with ancient SoD. Enjoy your OP Necropolis and Conflux then.
I mean SoD was good, but it could be so much better! Luckily HotA and myself did exactly that.

Not really, as if electronic pianos don't yet match the quality, which is their goal, is only due to technical reasons, not a specific will to slip from that goal.
The irony is, while Hota narrative was the usual "not another wog, but faithful to original mechanics and atmosphere", it ended by being much more harmful than wog, in the sense that the compatibility with sod maps is now a thing of the past. While with WoG + clicking on tweaks on/off, any map is 100% playable.
This is not a critic, hota is tremendous step and gave a second life to Heroes, just pointing some dissonances.

I don't think you understood me at all so let me rephrase:
some SINGLE PLAYER maps can become impossible to beat if you change the game's mechanics in a way that prevents what the mapmaker assumed is possible.
Those maps are best played in HoMM3 HD rather than hota.

Sorry, perhaps I missunderstood then.
Yes some maps are perhaps best played with only SoD. Still Necropolis and Conflux are far too strong in original game.

Not the ideal place to discuss this but I dont think that’s exactly accurate. I mean, sure, if they could produce synthesizers that can also sound just like a Steinway with the press of a button, they would have. But the main goal of a synthesizer today, isnt to imitate an acoustic piano, just like electric guitars arent produced to imitate the classical guitar. They are a thing of their own. People use them to play different kinds of music.
Anyway, it was a tongue in cheek comment.

Also "nerfing" the game should be exclusive to mods, not expansions, because of compatibility issues. Hota already screws almost all maps prior to it, due to changing artifacts/relics behavior + "nerfing" + resistance, this is like inventing a new piano where you can't play neither Beethoven, Mozart and anything until 2020. Subversive.
Uhm H3 expansions broke the balance of the original game without expansions so your point defeats itself.
I think this would easily be circumvented with maps saying in what version they are suppossed to be played, like mines so in the text box in H4.
