how do u play PRESERVE?
I play Faerie Dragons and Water Elementals
I take 5 heroes:
*thief
*knight
*cleric
*2 chaos mages
first go chaos magic maximum with heroes, then order and then death
to devastate with chaos spell-storm and destroy dangerous unit with hypnose and sacrifice
Usually I start fighting when I;ve built creature portal and got some elems, but sometimes I wait till I build Faerie Dragons as well and then buy off all Water Elems and Faerie Dragons and heroes as far as I get gold and go fighting

If I'm forced to play with Nature, which I highly dislike, I go:
Elves, Griffins and Phoenixes and either Water elementals or Mantises from Creature Portal.
Hero-wise, I get an Archer and a Nature magic focused hero.

I now also play Phoenixes and Mantis
them are too OP, especially speed on adventure mapp...
usually pray for vampiric touch - and I get anything
Phoenixes rebirth and Matis first strike are very helpful before vamp touch though )

Preserve strategy
At least 4 heroes, but will try to go to 6 depending on the map.
I tend to pick the white tigers mostly because they are cheaper but also because for me, they are more useful in battle. I would pick elves only for castle defense.
I mostly pick the griffin unless the map has poor resources or sometimes if I want the unicorns to tank in front of my faerie dragons.
From creature portal I go for mantises mostly and rarely for water or air elementals.
The fourth level creatures depend on my enemies. If it's easy for my enemies to obtain resistance to faerie spells, I go for phoenixes, otherwise I go faeries.
The heroes are focused on scouting pathfinding, tactics defense (specially if I use faeries, I have low focus on offense as their attack does not benefit) and the spell schools.
For spells I focus on summonings, more on life magic with faeries, more on chaos magic with phoenixes. Heretics and wardens are my main focus for hero classes but others are great too, for example fire guard, ranger etc.
If you use Mantises, quicksands and summonings well, you are not going to have many hard battles along your way.

Why 4 heroes?!? Ok, I don't need to know why because I would go for 4, too if I could. The more heroes the better xD .... But, how are you going to level up all those heroes with the skills you want (if we ignore maps with lots of powerups, that is, because those are pretty lame)?
Also, are you keeping all heroes under the same roof, or you split them?
Also, why do you focus on Life Magic? Order / Chaos are always the way to go as you 1st magic school choice. It's true that I've last played H4 long ago and I don't remember too much of it, but even so Life Magic is situational if I remember correctly. You only need certain spells against certain enemies (the wards for example are situational, even if very good spells indeed)
Last but not least, have you played the "Black and Yellow" map? It's the only H4 map I ever play, especially since I've modified it a little to keep the annoying AI from attacking me. Only I decide when I attack it, and I always do it after leveling my main 3 heroes to the level I want. I think even in PvP this map is great because it's almost symmetrical and balanced, and it also has strong monster if you play on hardest difficulty. Honestly, give it a try if you play H4 extensively. Also, if I remember correctly you start with 50 vampires, but - like I said - I modified the map a little, so when map starts I don't get the 50 vampires anymore, which is better than rushing through it and killing everything in day 1. If you get rid of the vampires, too, the map is pretty good to play.

If the map is poor:
- how do you learn order spells?
- why wouldn't you go for ressurection or just life magic as your heroes would be weak and you always need less casaulties for your creatures
- chaos on poor map is not as useful because you cannot level your damaging spells
- best choice on such maps is warden and if you can get nobility, a cardinal or just get combat with life and a fire guard (scouting is also less needed on poor map)
For normal maps (being able to get level 10 or more for 4/6 heroes before meeting your enemies) is the strategy I would use.
I avoid using non town skills in my strategies as the maps that have those do not allow town unique gameplay, but you always play the same but just with different creatures. You would always get nobility or demonologists or wizards, all will have magic resistance etc...

Um, if the map is poor then you will obviously have a hard time leveling up 2 heroes, let alone 4. That's the thing I was trying to make you aware of.
As for life magic... Preserve is probably the least town to have casualties in battles due to their summoning spells which they always get in mage guilds. If you can summon anything you won't have casualties, therefore you don't need resurrection (I also don't like the H4 version of resurrection, I like H3's version more).
The chaos spells... as weird as it may sound I always use non-damaging spells. I think that the H4 direct damage spells are more powerful than those in H3, so it makes sense to use them, but where's the fun in that? It's funnier to use could of confusion, cat reflexes, or mass misfortune instead of disintegrate / implosion / inferno / chain lightning.

If you need to fight 50 vampires or crusaders with 2 five level heroes, then resurrection might be better for less casaulties than summonong 3 water elwmentals.
