If we speak about spell patterns, then yes, there are little differencies between them and skill patterns. Though knowing some low-level spells doesn't give you the exact info of other spells in the mage guild, it can help narrow down the amount of possible variants, so you could then tell which ones are more probable.

I saw some of that a month or so ago and downloaded one and thought I ran it but unless it did something I'm unaware of I didn't see a difference.

So is if you wanted 1- town portal and 2- water walk what base level 1 and 2 spells would you want to see?
