Afterlife

My theory is that we are all here for a pourpose and after you die you will be re-incarnated if u haven't met ur pourpose...once you meet it then you can rest in peace

None... because there is No afterlife...

It's just a bedtime story.. To light the fear of dying once.. If you tell your kids that they will live happy in heaven when they die they will be less afraid..

You are quite right. Just to add - it was also easier for religion to keep people in obedience. Being affraid of burning in hell or hoping to get in heaven, people wouldn't commit crimes and would submit to Church.

Yet, it is sometimes pleasant to think of afterlife
Especially some pagan afterlife ideas are very exciting.

We need somebody that has already died once to tell us
Probably suffering somewhere in a nasty place.
Or bathing in milk and honey in an eden-garden (but only if you have been exclusively pious

I am more curious if the dead body keeps its senses.
How would it feel when worms eat into your flesh?!
Or what if they burn you?

Btw ancient Thracians had this custom when a noble warrior dies to bury alive his favourite wife with him. And wives often fought, arguing who loved the deadman most and who should be buried. It was greatest honour for a woman.

Similar custom existed among ancient Slavs. But they preffered to burn wives, not to bury. Slavic women often hanged themselves after their husband's death, considering widowhood not worthy to live.

One arguement is that the afterlife is a myth

as humans cannot deal with the thought of their own mortality.  We each believe ecretly, that we will live forever, somehow, in some form.

I don't really have an opinion on the afterlife myself. It is dangerously close to having an opinion on religion.

Well,

In *most* modern culture it is the accepted doctrine tht the afterlife, such as there may be, is generally created by some sort of deity or higher intellegnce.

Ghosts can be found in all cultures and are a by-product which originated in early mythology, and are generally connected with the deity of the dead in some way, or his/ her harbingers.

Also, the concept of *life* after death is surely a catergory mistake unless we can
a) Isolate the essence of life
b) Believe in re-incarnation

and *b* would lead us into, amongst other things, buddism.. and i think the Norse seven realms(?).

Faith is a powerful thing, without faith, without something to believe in people would just give up, for example every early civilization had a type of religion, as it was nessisary to go on with life, nowadays its not needed, therefore athiests and such pop up, cos well we evolved..
personaly i beleive well i dunno what i beleive in

Cat-

I think there might be more possibilities than the a or b ones which you offered. The essence of life is so open to intrepretation- so is reincarnation. Reincarnation as do you consider life as a bacterium really life? Actually reincarnation is more in the realm of hinduism, buddhists don't really believe in reincarnation in the popular sense, more as a progression of learning experiences for everyone, except bohdisattvas- those people who choose to taint themselves by returning to help the unenlightened after they themselves have attainted nirvana. Most people eventually reach enlightenment supposedly and thus achieve nirvana taking them out of the hell of repeating life on earth. Also buddhists always reincarnate as humans whereas hindus and a few other religions can reincarnate as nearly anything(the rules on what you can incarnate as are very arcane).

No one in the world may stumble upon this topic again, or simply never take notice of this frigging long essay like - comment, but o well - by "god's will" maybe, i was meant to write in this comment in this specific moment, and i just mean to express which i deeply feel, while perhaps if im lucky - i may even influence or at least touch with that which i believe in - certain other people. so here: lol forgive me for reviving a far-gone "dead" and old topic.. but  i msut admit this is one of the most interesting topics for me... considering i've always pondered this day to day as a kid.. and unlike other ppl, i rlly never hesitated to ask a question like this.. once i remember in kindergarten i raised my hand asked aloud to teacher, "what happens when you die?" and she's like, ".... well we believe that god will bless us and take us to heaven with him if we behave good in life, and if you do bad things - you have to go to hell after you die" ... jeesus christ. Heres the thing with this whole issue in the big picture - along with religious idealogy and so forth.. many human beings tend to believe in god and a mysterious superior being above all of us - mostly for  the reason and purpose that they fear death, and wish to put up a futile effort to reject an end to their being... and thus they speak of an afterlife and heaven, maybe even hell. they use the term "god" to justify their petty wish for a continuation even after death and life. It is pitiful, and stupid. more so in the recent years, athiests and non-god believers, or non-religion believers or w/e have been growin in number, and as these life-size debates spread among the world, they are in constant duel of words - over whether our universe was created by some supernatural force and being, or whether only science came to form us.. in the end however: the one true, unanswered question surrounding this topic is, whether they as individuals believe in a, literally, "place" after life, after our brains have dissapitated and bodies and bones turned dust.. that our "soul" lives on. I for one believe in a god, solely for the purpose and belief that we as human beings require as a necessity some force driving, or at least as we feel - leading and directing our lives to wher it may bound. Still, i hate those who believe in heaven or hell or a place wher we go after we die. It is illogical, a porely thought out fantasy of some sort, that stands only on behalf of a crazed fanatical, and helpless belief in a immaterial hope. yet as many of you have already mentioned, some spiritual belief is of course at this day and age - era - still a requirement for our world to remain together.. or else destroy it self. but sooner or later - even now - most ppl know, rather than believe, in with themselves that life is physical, while this ideaology and spirit is nontheless no more than taht which we claim, and stand by, but often not even truly believe - to be honest... i in many ways, no directly fear death. and wish could no other than a way out of its end. but well.. i am still a firm opposer to all this religion and heaven and spiritual crap. I know it means that i would rather believe in an end without being, and rather would reject a future of existence, but it is not for us to decide that either. Since it is the way the world was created, we must die.. and its always a painful acknowledgement, but o well - sucks for us. maybe god doesn't care bout us humans afta all . In the meantime, play games, have fun, fight for what u believe in, get money, think, get obsessed in what u like or believe in , and party, have sex, and then sooner or later just die like u were meant to. And hopefully, if by then i created some sort of scientificaly formalated mixture or alterational chemical to either extend life, or let the brain and heart function forever without decaying - i may sell one of if to you.
