View Air & View Earth
Does anyone ever cast these spells and if you do why?
Do you cast them on a map you are familiar with?
Does AI cast these spells?

Yeah I guess that's how I feel about them, unneccassary most of the time, especially if you know the map and use plenty of scouts.

I never found them useful. EVER. Even on new maps.
What are they for since you can scroll throughout the map with the cursor and see everything in a 'better quality'?
I can recognize adventure map elements easily as opposed to view air where you have a lot of crowded symbols.
I dont know...i always considered them useless.

Totally OP and a massive advantage in game.
Actually two of the most underrated spells in the game.
On random maps against humans especially so. They are such a cheap tool. You will never go the wrong way or get ambushed by an enemy. All the while freeing most of your scouts for more useful purposes, like chaining you army around.

They are both good spells in MP games.
If you end up leveling up the Air magic, you can see your opponent in the fog of war, so he cannot really surprise you.
Basic view earth isn't very good, but on expert you can see how the map has been generated, as by just looking at the roads you can tell where the towns/portals are exactly.
In mirrored templates (surface and underground are exactly the same), both spells can be used to tell what kind of path the opponent has decided to go, and to some extend, you can combinine that information with the one you're given from the thieves guild, and therefore you can decide if you should also go with the same route or not.

OhforfSake said: I did use the view spells, especially the air variant, a lot. The information gained I thought was priceless, but in reality most of the time I could probably do without.
If playing without Fly and DD, I pretty much prefer Water to Air but I try to get it too and it's not cause of Haste or Chain Lightning, it's because of View Air.
If my starting area has more then one entry point at the same distance of different enemies, it helps to choose the path I want to explore first. Then it helps a lot in pursuing the remain enemy heroes, gaining tempo to go in a different direction. If I played with your nerfed TP, it would be even more important, cause I wouldn't be able to return to main town, if that area was invaded after I had taken some other (nearer) town. In that case I would be casting it everyday and constantly try to measure if I could or couldn't return in time to defend it.
View Earth I find a little less useful but it helps a lot if I don't have the other and also to find mines that I'm often desperate for (usually wood and ore), cause I've progressed too fast to have the resources I need to build everything I want.

This.
OhforfSake said: Sometimes an enemy hero is easier to spot in view air, because their symbol stands out.

How can they be considered "bad"?
Knowing the artifacts and creatures beyond fog of war is a HUGE boon if you are playing seriously.
Of course playing for laughts they are just a boring spell except for the quirky icons.
BUT, even if you know the map, there is a high chance any given map uses random monsters and/or artifacts.
Is the relic in the map worth rushing half the map for it such as a Sword of Judgement or Helm of Heavenly Enlightenment that will win you the game, or a trash "sphere of water magic"? The "view" spell will tell. And this will most probably affect the outcome.

No, it won't. You can see where they are but nothing else, at least in Homm III.

If that was the case I would use View Air a lot more, but it only reveals the location of artifacts and I already know that, so it's pretty useless.

I only use View Air to see where the artifacts are before I start dimension-dooring in a direction of unexplored areas to go searching for them. Or to see enemy hero's to chase them down.
The rare times I used view Earth was to see how dense the map is before playing on day 1. You ever get those maps that have mountains on more than 50% of the playing map? or one subterranean level that has one or 2 tunnels and so much dead space? I prefer maps that are really dense with as much open area as possible, Otherwise the feeling of "exploring" for me runs out really quickly.

View Air is underated spell, imo. At Expert it help you track down cities and enemy heroes. It's great for both SP and PVP matches.
View Earth is also great. It will show you where loose resources are placed, how map look like(obstactles, paths), where mines are located.
Both spells + thieves guild help plan strategy.

These spells could really stand to take a page from MM7 and have no casting cost at expert Fire/Air magic, but unfortunately the code doesn't really want to respect a null casting cost.

@BTB
Can you not just return the spell points after the spell was cast? So the sum is zero

I asked AlexSpl that exact same question, actually. I forget the answer, but it was basically "no".
