Heroes a strategy/rpg game?
Well some time ago I had this idea about Heroes4 becanming somewhat an rpg game. Like your hero would set up a camp at the end of the day also buy food for your army so they would have energy for gold that will be his salary etc.
Well with the gold you have an income and you would have to pay your heroe so the would be with you if you would not pay them then they would just break away with the army that they have and just become wondering and trying to get recruited by somebody else.
Also maybe heroes could have rank. From most important to least or newest. Also when you retreat from a battle you could split up your army and then they could meet again. This way you would not loose as much army and loose your hero.
Also to get better learning in the university you could stay there longer. Say you study basic wisdom and stay there an extra week you could get it up all the way to expert.
Another thing is that you would have to camp somewhere every night. Like buy some rooms in the tavern(for your salary). Or sleep in the barn behind the stables. Or just make a small camp in a cave or say in a town that is neutral but you don't want to conquer it. Or you can just cam poutside. This would give your troops rest so that they can be readdy for the next day.
Tell me what you think.

What?Hero buying rooms and sleeping in barns??Excuse me,but are you in the wrong discussion forum? This isn't a forum for Might and Magic 9.I think I don't want to worry about such trivial things like the accomodation of my troops. Those monsters are fighting in battles. They are not ninnies or wimps who need to stay in a five-star hotel during their expedition

Ehm...
I think you are missing my point. This will only apply to small armies of HUMAN troops or just a hero himself. I mean I know that they are trained to fight and they are not wimps, but if you have a hero by himself he COULD get a romm at a TAVERN. NOT A HOTEL. Or you can just ignore the room thing, but you should have a camp at the end of each day. If you don't camp energy down. Less energy lower morale and skills.
I forgot to mension this but I was thinking of a thing as an artifact for each creature. Like there would be artifacts for level 1 creatures, level 2, level 3 etc.
Tell me your oppinions and pleas don't missuderstand my meanings.

Excelent . Wrong , but excelent
The whole idea is good, but we have to face it, it will never happen (well... i'd be quite surprised). I have been playing HOMM since the first's DEMO came out, and though there's been a lot of change, none has affected the core gameplay. Its still the six ressources from the begginning that we are using and its still the same way to make combat though i have heard that heroes will be able to fight. But, you know what i mean, the change would be too radical. Maybe a HOMM 7 or 8 will look like that if the game has evolved enough trough the others...

get King's Bounty or DragonBone Stuff for PS2
it's not so good as RPG game - but you have SALARY, and you must pay for your SOLDIERS each weekend. Bad things happened if you don't pay.
King's bounty was made 10-11 years ago, and then it progressed into Heroes Of Might And Magic. Dragon Bone Stuff is freshen up 3D looking game for PS2 - but it's nearly the same as KB - just name of the VILLAINS you must catch are different. If you have the Heroes3 Compendum version (heroes1/2/3 together) - then there is KB on one of the disks. Or you can search google.com for "King's bounty" and find it as a zip file (abandonware). Try it it's really fun.

Good
I like your idea Launcelot, but it probably won't come any time soon. Well there still is Might and Magic, right? Too bad because I would like to see it. Well you really should try kings Bounty. If you like Homm1 you will like this too.

The salary upkeep should only apply to those heroes that you hired from the taverns.Starting heroes are somewhat like the ruler of the empire and it seems ridiculous for him to desert the empire simply because he got no salary.
However,I would insist that finding accomodation is a bad idea. This is too trivial a matter to worry about.
As what Sir Dunco said earlier, these ideas would not be implemented anytime soonI would like to see more adventuring aspects of RPGs,not the mundane ones(like where to camp for the night;what to have for dinner, blah, blah).

Not boring
Actualy it would not be boring this way. It would make this more interesting. Yeah, if better equals boring than yes it would be.
I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet but would it no be nice if heroes would get promotions like higer ranks. The most expereienced and longest living heroe would be the top hero and from there down on.

Promotions
I'm all for the promotions idea,Sir Dunco
Look, since the Might and Magic series can have heroes promoted, why not heroes?Seen on the H3trio website that liches can be hired as heroes in Heroes4.Could be it be that liches are promoted necromancers?I certainly hope so
And Lanceout, sorry for running down your accomodation ideas.Glad to see that you're so committed to your convictions. If so,we'll hope that we'll see it maybe in Heroes5(if there's one).Perhaps the developers can make it interesting and not a chore.

I like to see that somebody likes my idea(s)
Hmm... you like them. Maybe I should make a post just for my ideas. Yeah Liches into necromancers, would be nice eventhought I don't like necro that much. Yes, and not only status in town I meant like A Field General or something a scout and so on.

Let me add somethings to what Launcelot said
I like ur Ideas Launcelot and let me add a couple of things. At night there would be a black skie and some creatures would have double attack (Gosths for example)
Also I like the accomondations Idea and at the end of each day u should set up a camp. Sleep would regenerate your untis and hero so they would fight and move at maximum. The less energy the less movement and strenght. At night the light radius would be smaller and ur heroes couldn't see far. U could only see things for a couple of hexes(or whatever those spaces are called). A beacon could makeur light radius bigger.(this would work in caves and undergroundtoo). Well Those are just a few of my ideas. I'll post the rest later.

Well, your original idea, Launcelot, might not be bad, but I find it a bit difficult to see how they could make that an interesting part of gameplay. Wouldn't it be an annoying, tedious thing that only decimated your resources or gold or whatever?
Personally, I would like to see more diplomacy in the game (as well as opera music ), like you could have a peace treaty with a "neutral" enemy for a while, and maybe, if one part was stronger, he could demand tribute and such. This isn't thought all the way through, and it would obviously have to have the ability to eliminate this option between certain factions (so you don't ally with the guy you're supposed to kill (or maybe, in multiplayer, this would be really great, with treatys and backstabbing and so forth))
Anyway, just give the idea a run, and see if it runs fast.

My opinion is that HEROES is more STRATEGIC than RPG game.
Why is that?
RPG style of games tend to concetrate on given character or characters. You follow some predefined story line which your character mainly follows. There is always a goal for that character - and this goal is always predefined. Even if there is way to have two or more goals - they are again predefined.
In random map of HOMM - there is no story line... actually there is - by playing the game you are creating one - you are improvising - but that's not RPG anymore - cause RPG is playing-by-role, e.g. not improvising.
Why strategy? - cause you have elements of economic, military, political situation you have to control. You can't find such in a regular RPG game (Diablo II, Baldur's Gate, Grandia II, Skies of Arcadia, Final Fantasy). In HOMM you can very easily change your ROLE - so it's not anymore role - thus not real RPG.

Why not?
Sounds interesting. May turn the heroes on an rpg. Though, I think the heroes four is going to be a very different game. What a shame they don't have Inferno any more. It's my favourite town!

That could be...
butt hat's not nesearly true. U can have options of the outcome so the game doesn't follow a certain story line
