It's unfortunate it was banned in Tennessee public schools. The purpose (obviously) is to mend ethnic divides, not widen them, and it does in fact work when it is correctly applied.
The nice thing though, is that that ban can't really be effectively enforced

i come from a time when supposedly offensive words weren't synonymous with their original meanings. in other words, i wasn't insulting those with down syndrome because i never refer to them as that word. i use that word strictly for the non-handicapped who otherwise would have full capability of their mental facilities.
