CRASH during AI TURN (reproducible)
Hello there, sorry for barging in so late to the party.
I am experiencing a reproducible crash during the AI's turn. It usually happens when the AI takes a fight (presumably using the new spells). This crash only happens when the mod is active - if deactivated, the game no longer crashes.
- I have the latest ERA 3 Launcher
- I have the latest HD mod
If nothing else, is there a toggle option where I could prevent/disable the AI from using the new spells? That may be why it is crashing. I noticed that reloading the same savegame will sometimes pass that AI turn correctly, but then it might crash during its next (this depends on what fights the AI takes and how). Always during the same AI player's turn (Pink, for example).

Greetings. Can you reproduce it in pure SoD, so we can eliminate porting issue? Anyways, I need at least a crash log to see into the nature of it deeply.

Seems like a plugins compatibility issue. NewSpells is a plugin for SoD. I've never tested the ERA version of it.
Maybe try to disable

1. How do I disable it?
2. What is it for exactly? Won't I cripple the game somehow by disabling it?

Just delete the file or disable in mod manager under plugins from gem mod.
In era you can disable most stuff without a problem.
In general the new Spells plugin has still to be considered beta status if used under era platform. Safest would be to not use it at all.

Do you know why we are in such a struggle to balance things in this game, including spells? Because there are no limits and costs/weights to those things. You cannot make, for example, 20 different things to be +/- equivally useful. Still, people struggle to "find a grail", which mathematically is not possible. It's now 2023, and people are still busy with what will never work.
Can we nerf Expert Slow somehow? Does Eagle Eye deserve a brighter future? There are no solution to these problems unless you are not limiting. Remember mana? Why does it work? It has a limit. But... there are no limits for number of spells, there are no weights of spells. You cannot balance such setups.
Just my old ideas. Every hero has equilavent of mana for spells he/she can learn. A hero has 20 points of that stat, for example, he can learn Slow (weight 15) + Magic Arrow (weight 5). Until he gets more points, hero cannot learn more spells.
It's applicable to secondary skills as well. Every skill should have own weight. And, for example, Expert Earth Magic should cost at least as many points as three other less useful secondary skills.
You cannot just allow to learn spells and skills in an equal way and keep balance. Some spells will always be better than others, some skills will always be better than others. You cannot just change numbers and say - hello, they are now balanced. That will never happen.
What you should do if you chase fair gameplay is to acknowledge strengths and weaknesses of spells and skills, setup limits for them, and assign them weights which will reflect their power.

That is certainly a way to look at things
However reality is a bit more murky.
Say, Basic Earth Magic costs 3 times as much as Artillery
Then, what? When you level, you need three levels to learn Basic Earth magic? Or is this just a cap to max number of skills?
If the first, this is hard to implement (perhaps "you don't get secondary skill next two levels"); if the second, this does little for regular balance at all, because immediate usability is more important than "max hero potential". And even in Max Hero Potential, nothing beats Expert Town Portal.
So, without a general balance, this approach also does not work.

I don’t agree with you (as often happens ). Balance is based on the fact that in different game or battle conditions (different army compositions, etc.) the usefulness of spells or skills changes. The skill of the player is to correctly understand the conditions in which he is now and what will be more effective. But the truth is that in Heroes 3 this balance is done very poorly (Heroes 2 is better, but some things can be improved). For example, it is obvious that Mass Slow or Haste in Heroes 3 has no rival in terms of effectiveness.

From this point of view HoMM3 is already perfectly balanced, as I once said, don't pursuit fairness in one particular game, play 1000+ games, and if you won, at least, 75% of them, you are a strong player. Yes, but, for example, heavy penalty to experience applied after getting Expert Earth Magic could compensate its advantages, at least, partly. Say, after choosing Expert Earth Magic at a level-up you get -50% penalty to experience, or, say, isn't allowed to learn any skills the next 3-5 levels at all, effectively loosing 3-5 levels of secondary skills. Another approach is points and weights. Every level-up you gain some points, which you spend to learn secondary skills at level-ups. Expert Earth Magic will not even show at a level-up until you have enough points to "buy" it. Of course, in this scenario you are bound to save points, skipping skills at level-ups, if you want to be able to buy this skill, what makes you weaker. The question is how many skills you are ready to skip to have a powerful secondary skill sooner (btw, it eliminates the problem with Eagle Eye, Learning, etc. without banning them; let their cost be 0). You, for example, may have to skip Logistics several times even to get Expert Earth. And this, if well thought, could potentially nerf Mass Slow without nerfing its effects.

They do not need to be equally useful. The issue is, that you end up casting the same few spells over and over, and some of those are very easy to get level 1 spells.
As a result, the whole magic system revolves around acquiring earth magic. To the point that I want to level several might heroes, and the one that is offered earth at level 4 will be the main, regardless of other properties.

Yeah more about making you have to think about what choice you make rather than "all equally viable in all situations"

The fact of the matter is that no. For example, Fortune/Misfortune is too weak to be competitive under any conditions, and Slow/Haste is too strong (as I said earlier). That is, some work on the balance should have been carried out and it would not have been difficult, but, alas, the developers did not do enough work.
As for the mechanics you proposed, they could well be used in a hypothetical new part of HoMM, but for modding HoMM3 they are too radical (for my taste, of course).

Some spells will always be better than others. Slow is just a spell that good in almost any situation. Don't know what to do Cast Mass Slow Fortune/Misfortune are very situational spells, work good with big armies. You cannot control their effects directly, but additional chance to do double damage may have a devastating effect, or may not (but you must understand that by casting this spell you buy only a chance, and you are not guaranteed to be lucky). Another thing, that you probably already has high Luck value. But this is a flaw of the original game mechanics - there should not have been a +3 cap at all. To save the Luck cap and make Fortune stronger, you need independent from Luck value chance of triggering. Say, temporarily +10%, even if you have already maxed chances. This would be really awesome.

I know. I bet even HotA with its authority won't be able to force such changes. But you can always make your experimental mod/plugin to experience new mechanics firsthand.

What about adding it to Heroes? It would prohibit escape for 3/4/5 turns respectively. The problem is that it could not be cast on a specific unit, but on the entire battlefield instead, so it also could not be dispelled. Or you'd have to implement the mechanics to cast spells directly on the enemy hero...
Another and also simpler idea is to just implement a new battlefield from which you cannot escape.
Edit: Or the spell would be cast before the battle (on the adventure map) and would prohibit either side from escaping until the end of the battle. It could be cast 1/2/3 times per day.

I have a question whether it is possible to add spells as they are added, e.g.

I mean we have spells, but no in spell book (only for creature)
but it could also work if the player performs some action on the object/trigger and then triggers the spell. Freely. The main idea is to avoid this spell in spell book, but it could be used in code H3API: LoadSpell(id_spell)

Unit keeps attacking until either it or target is dead. Target always retaliates infinitely.
