Well, the reason is really very easy. The Leprechauns doesn't have the same body proportions as a human so they can't be expected to walk the same way either.
I guess with the body proportion the dwarves, leprechauns and the halflings have they are all much more likely to a have a wobbling walk (to a lesser or greater degree).
When it comes to the squires (and any other creature/hero clad in a lot of armour) the armour restricts them so they probably have to walk much like the way the squires do.
I'm actually surprised that the Crusaders and the Knights don't adopt a similar walking style, because with all their armour they really have no other way of walking. So I don't think it's unrealistic at all that Leprechauns and Squires walk the way they do.
Judging by replies to the poll so far it seems, however, that HC members associate this walking style with horny ogres.
Strange, but then again I've no clue what the ogres do on their spare time...

I doubt they would have in reality designed armor that was uncomfortable to walk around in.. that would cost lives in a battle.
And the leprechauns legs would be shorter to stay in proportion. I know people, regular people (humans) who aren't of the same proportion as others (there are a large range of heights, weights, and builds) and no one walks like that unless they've got a disorder.

In reality anyone that did wear what the crusader does would have to be stronger than 90% of the people. All the armor alone that the crusader is wearing would weigh 100 lbs+ depending on what timeframe you would be talking about(The later the time the better the alloys they made armor out of). Armor did save lives by being armor. If you are wearing a lot of it you were not expected to move around very much.

...I actually don't see anything wrong with how any of the creatures move...they seem pretty realistic to me. Although the leprechauns actually do walk a bit funny, as with squires, pikemen and whatever, let's see how you wlak if you have on armor. It was not intended to be comfort or speed efficient. You have to sacrifice that for increased safety...

Walking in armor: Reality Check
As someone who has done medieval re-creation for over 20 years, I can assure you that, although you do indeed carry your weight a bit differently in any sort of armor, you don't look like a Squire walking. Actually, the way Crusaders move now isn't bad, especially since they got rid of that stupid clang and clatter with their movement. I've fought in full field plate (which is what they are wearing) and it's not that noisy.

Heavy armor can slow you down, but it won't make you walk funny.. That is just stupid. No one would design armor like that. There's no specific time frame for HOMM, so you will have to assume any armor will do. It's seen in movies all the time, they don't walk funny. I know you're all fans and would try to justify everything 3DO does that raises eyebrows, but there's no need. Some things shouldn't be, and your explainations are THE answer.
Look at the Squire's armor.. it is not all that heavy, and on the legs, there is no reason why it would cause him to walk funny. I would understand if the armor around the legs was so thick that it would get in the way of each other so he couldn't walk normally, but that is not the case, and it doesn't sound likely anyone would wear armor like that in the first place.
As for leprechauns.. I know people in real life of that proportion (all sorts of proportions actually) and they walk like any other..
Admit it, the animations are bad. If anyone walks funny, I doubt it was intended to look exactly like that. They probably felt it was sufficient and did not justify redoing them for cosmetic purposes.

The animation that bugs me most is the Barbarian. Their legs never even approach straight. My legs hurt just thinking about it.
I *know* there's a slightly crouched posture appropriate to fighting. Lots of them, in fact. And I know that it takes a while to develop the strength to hold them for a while. But all the ones I've ever learned favoured such things as maneuverability and balance[1] - both in the stance and in the walk - and the barbarian looks very peculiar to me. Okay, so a barbarian has power, strength, as their main asset. But that stance is too low to support that, as far as *I* can tell! (Anyone more knowledgeable around to disagree?)
DragonSister
[1] The 'Wing Chun' ones especially so - but then that martial art form was developed by and for small asian women, and somehow power is never going to come into it much.

They are in a Berserker mode, it makes your body take strange shapes because it cannot inhabit the rage that is exploding

OK, to all of you trying to defend some of the HOMMIV creatures walking with it being natural and realistic, you are welcome to wash my groin any day. It's simply due to sucky graphics. When are you going to realize this?
And Jenova: Just because you've seen something in movies, doesn't make it true... jeez...

I guess seeing it (walking funny) in a game does make it realistic then Don?
BTW.. Movie makers do research. Fictional bits are of course not true, but historical bits are. I don't claim everything seen in movies is real, but I'm sure that in this case, armor does not make people walk funny. It can slow their walk, but wouldn't cause you to move your legs apart from one another with each step. It's common sense. Unless your armor around the thighs was so thick that each leg would hit each other if you walked straight. If the armor they put on in the movie did cause them to walk funny, it would show while filming wouldn't it? So I don't see how you can say that what the movie represents isn't necessarily real. Because it is, in this case, pure and simple.
I understand you already agree with the notion that it's bad animation rather than realism, but I wasn't talking about other instances from movies.
Now it would be funny if the entire battalion was walking like the squires in the movies (if they did, it would be deliberate rather than caused by the armor)..
