New AAA Might & Magic game in development
News here.
And here.
Key points:
- hiring for Senior Brand Manager position
- AAA title
- "reinvents" the franchise
- currently in early development (allegedly)
- Ubisoft Shanghai (an internal studio, as opposed to external, like Limbic Entertainment, Black Hole, etc.)
All of this looks good to me. The reinventing part being paramount. I wouldn't have it any other way. The franchise needs to move forward and it was about damn time to start thinking outside of the box. So I'm feeling cautiously optimistic about it.
Thoughts?

You are the second but your post is more than few words. So we should discuss it here.
Yes but last time we have 'a lot of' 'MM' games by ubi. Its something like this?

Reinventing may be always online DLC crap. More so considered its developed in China. I'm not in.

Yea, I didn't notice the other thread. Probably because of the bad title. I'll keep my thoughts here.
So, I guess the franchise still lives. Barely. I wonder if we'll see anything other than a TBS or an RPG game.

We shall have to see how this new release goes. Of course, given Ubisoft's past moves in the area, I'm not sure if, even if we do get a TBS, that it would necessarily feel like a HoMM/MM:H title, or would just be it's own thing, like HoMMVI was.

All the clues make me think this might be a cross-platform game between mobile and PC.
Either way, seeing as how Ubisoft has destroyed the M&M franchise, I have absolutely zero hope this will be good and I will probably never play it.

Whatever it is I'll probably pirate it just because I'm a sucker for anything might and magic even if it's snow. I'll buy it if it's good by some miracle. Between this, Songs of Conquest, and Heroes Hour, I'm hoping HoMM-like games see a revival. Unlikely, but I can dream.

I know this is an unpopular opinion but there were a lot of things I liked about Ashan on paper, it was just very very poorly executed. I'd like to see it rebooted as a planet in the old universe. Either make the Dragon Gods less overly-centric to every factions culture, or make them more interesting characters. They don't have to literally be gods, they can be really powerful elementals that the people of Ashan have worshiped as gods since the Silence. IMO there are a lot of ways to make it work. Or they could just add a few of the cooler characters from Ashan into the NWC lore somehow, and I'd be okay with that. I'm just happy that we're getting SOMETHING after 7 years.

Meh, the dragon gods were indicative of Ubisoft's lack of writing ability.

Probably so, but you can make a creative spin on a bland premise. They just chose not to.

Yes but you forget that originally Might and Magic was not built on a bland premise. It already had a well-established universe that people loved. A strong and wide fanbase was already there.
I mean your argument would be much more tolerated if there was nothing Might and Magic before Ubisoft. They didn't create the universe, they butchered the one we had before.

Yeah I hear you. Heroes 5 was such a big part of my childhood and pretty much my introduction to the fantasy genre so I tend to view it with rose-tinted glasses and want to fix Ashan rather than get rid of it. It wasn't until much, much later that I was introduced to the NWC lore and saw how much better it was. I'd be really sad to see Raelag, Kha-Beleth and Zehir go, for instance. I guess there's no reason they couldn't add them in as non-canon heroes for multiplayer or whatever, but still. Maybe once I'm done with the DoR writing I'll get back to the novelization/lore correction I started of Ashan a few years back.

Songs of Conquest and Hero's Hour are not very good. They aren't bad as standalone games, but when you know they are HoMM spiritual successors and you compare them to HoMM3, they are vastly inferior.

Wait... didn't NWC already discard most of that well-established universe that people loved when they made HoMM 4?

They scrapped Enroth, but that was only the setting for the HoMM series, the MM series, IIRC, featured multiple worlds.

Imagine how good HoMM4 may have been if they didn't make it isometric and did all those unnecessary gameplay changes that resulted in the game's failure.
If only they had built on top of HoMM3 and just expanded it with new features, enhanced the graphics and the UI, it would've been so much better.

I think Heroes IV was a good game and I appreciate the innovations (not all but most of them) even though I still prefer Heroes I - III overall. I think H4 gets too much flak as the one that "killed" the old universe. I definitely enjoy H4 more than anything set in Ashan. But that's just my tastes.
On the other hand, a bigger and better H3 is what most of us dreamed of and it does feel like a wasted chance. HoMM players that I've talked to online or in real life over the years say that H4 could've been the best game of the series by far if they made it that way.
Then there's the question of what might've been if NWC developed Heroes V...
