Harry Potter thread
I still like the Harry Potter books. Maybe not as much as I did when I was a child/teenager, since now I see they're not the best thing since sliced bread, but I certainly see their appeal.
As for the movies, I regard the second movie as the best. Faithful to the book but also having its personal touch.
The first movie was good, but lacked some unique personality. The book is also good for a starter, very good actually, but feels like an appetizer rather than the main course.
The third movie on the other hand tried to distance itself too much from the book, and I didn't enjoy it that much, in spite of the good casting and soundtrack. Removed stuff that was big in the books and added a few stupid scenes.
The fourth movie was a large failure in my eves, especially compared to the book.
The fifth movie was very good, removed all the filler from the longest book and kept the essentials.
The sixth movie, borderline unwatchable for me. The sixth book is actually my favorite.
And then the last two movies were pretty good due to the fact that they had enough space to adapt a single book. Unfortunately the seventh book is not high on my list.
So, I'd rank the movies:
1. Chamber of Secrets
2. Order of the Phoenix
3. Philosopher's Stone
4. Deathly Hallows, parts I and II
5. Prisoner of Azkaban
6. Half-Blood Prince
7. Goblet of Fire
And here's how I'd rank the books:
1. Half-Blood Prince
2. Chamber of Secrets
3. Goblet of Fire
4. Prisoner of Azkaban
5. Order of the Phoenix
6. Deathly Hallows
7. Philosopher's Stone

I ruined the series to myself, thanks to Doomforge's analysis and my own.
The worldbuilding of the universe is absolute ass.

I remember his thread. You both are correct. But I still like it for the lulz and nostalgia.

By now, the series for me is like an old armchair: Everybody knows it has it's edges, the wood and cloth are full of scratches and it does not stand straight anymore. Not to mention it looks as old and outdated as it is in some points. But for some reason, it is still astonishingly comfortable to sit in. Same goes for the HP series.
I still love it and, although I see the point of saying the worldbuilding is a desaster, I still love to return to the wizarding world. Of course that`s a lot of nostalgia. And part of that is probably: these books SHAPED me. I do not know if any other fiction had such an impact on me in my youth as that series. (And I consumed a LOT of fiction, as reality really was not my thing in these days. Plus, I had more time than now.  )
Still listening to the (German) audiobooks to fall asleep. Works awesome (armchair-effect again, I suspect).
Order in which I like the books best:
1. Goblet of Fire
2. Prisoner of Askaban
3. Order of the Phoenix
4. Deathly Hallows
5. Half-Blood Prince
6. Philosopher's Stone
7. Chamber of Secrets
Order in which I like the films best (though it's been a while):
1. Deathly Hallows (2 Movies per book just worked out a LOT better than 1)
2. Philosopher's Stone (Nostalgia goes BOOM)
3. Order of the Phoenix (story lacks, but they got the ambience SO right to me)
4. Prisoner of Askaban (same as OotP)
5. Chamber of Secrets (neither the magic of the first one nor the suspense and mood of later ones)
6. Half-Blood Prince (too much teenage drama, too little pensieve)
7. Goblet of Fire (That was, and is, a HERESY to me. How can you slaughter a book that much, ripping like 80% of characters, story AND mood out of it. Easily the biggest movie disappointment I ever had.)
Btw to me the movies have aged reasonably well in terms of visuals.

I totally agree with you on a lot of points, especially on how bad the sixth and fourth films were.
I wouldn't say the books shaped me but they are a big chunk of my childhood and early adolescence.

Can't state that enough. I mean, even with a teenager audience in mind, did ANYONE enjoy the absurd, but still boring "love stories" of part 6 (and, in fact, the whole series, which, to me, has pretty bad ones both in books and movies) more than the frigging backstory of Lord Voldemort?!?!? Was there anyone who thought while reading "Can't we get over this chapter shedding light on the most evil wizard in this book about magic and come back to teenagers being stupid? I love to read about teenagers acting stupid. It's SO original, and interesting." -.- Even when I WAS a teenage while reading it for the first time, I was annoyed. And I could not even relate to it then.
