Can a map-maker specify growth of wandering creatures?
Hi all.
Alas, I'm unable to play any more "Heroes of Might and Magic III" on my 6th generation computer, and I'm not good at trying out Compatibility Mode, which scares me a bit, as it didn't work for a later HoMM installment. So I bought on Steam “Heroes of Might and Magic III: HD” instead, hoping that someone here won't accuse me of treason, since although HD version offers mesmerizing graphics, it misses some of the neat features of its predecessor.
Regarding “Heroes of Might and Magic III: HD”, I was wondering about wandering creatures/neutral armies, creatures standing on the Adventure Map.
As stated on a certain web-page, “the type of the creatures can be totally random, restricted by creature level, or be specifically defined by the map-maker. Apparently, the number of creatures in a wandering creature encounter can be set between 1–4000. If an exact number is not defined, the amount is randomly generated between 1–99 (or in other words, between few and horde) depending on the level of the creatures. The number of wandering creatures grows by 10% on the first day of every week, but cannot exceed the limit of 4000 creatures.”
However, I strongly suspect that this tweaking/adjusting (regarding wandering creatures) works only regarding the original game, “HoMM 3”, and not in “HoMM 3 HD”; unless someone her can prove otherwise. I looked everywhere in my (HoMM 3 HD) map editor, or so it seems, and I can’t find anywhere this alleged option to define/drastically limit the numbers of randomly generated wandering creatures, as though a map-maker is denied of this in HoMM 3 HD, unless myopia plays a role, or lack in computer skills.
If someone here can shed light on this matter, I’d be greatly appreciated; forwhy I usually play as an Undead hero with Necromancy for special ability, thus, after the eight month, I’m able to rise legions and legions of skeletons, after defeating swarms, zounds, even legions of randomly generated wandering creatures, and bring many of them back as Skeletons by means of the spell Animate Dead, likewise the special ability Necromancy; which is, to say the least, simply too much, as there can be over 20.000 Skeletons at the end of the scenario in question. I wonder if there is a simple remedy for my boggle/nuisance.
Thank You.

That is a shame dude, H3 HD is a terrible game...
Anyway can't you right click on the monsters in the map editor, select properties and then specify the amount?

Try a WoG/ERA, esp. ACM, so maximum 8k 7lvl, maybe 40k 1lvl Also WoG/ERA allows monsters walking around the map.. So you get a 20k..
H3 HD is still developing..
Not more, because I can't understand the whole English than some replied.. So I realized then..

Thanks for the tips, Avatar, and Ghost. Heh, it sounds like Resurrection or Animate Dead spell that can bring back HoMM3.

Thanks for Your expression of sympathy, Phoenix4ever. And for heartfelt condolences as well. As per Your suggestion, I'm not certain to which monsters are You referring to, forwhy wandering creatures are randomly generated by the game. Unless, You mean monsters in a window, all of them are available there to choose from, including "MON" written in a red circle (MON, MON1, MON2 etc.), which I might place on the map, some of them I already did, and then choose growth rate etc. But what good would that do, if any, since, as I understand it, other, randomly generated wandering creatures will appear on the map, regardless. Unless I'm missing something here. I'm not seeing it, this simple magical remedy, not in my map editor; at least not yet, even though I looked in Map specifications and Options as well. I'm pretty sure this option is not included.

The red circles with "MON" ARE the random generated creatures and you should be able to edit their amount by right clicking them.
If a certain creature is already placed like let's say centaurs, you can right click them as well.
Only creatures generated by "Week of the X" will generate new random creatures and those you can't control, unless you hex edit the game or turn off "Week of the X" and plague. But you probably can't do any of those things with H3 HD.
Another, probably boring, solution is to ban Necromancy completely.

The only way you could try to control a tiny little bit how often do the monsters generated by the month of ... appear is by making sure that someone gets an Inferno with Grail at some point. Then they will appear every single month.
Disabling those special months can only be done with fan-made tools such as HotA map editor (requires SoD), Unleashed Editor (don't know, maybe works with HD edition too), recently also vcmi map editor (also requires SoD) or with some hex editors I guess. That option wasn't available not only in the base Restoration of Erathia game (and HD edition), but it also wasn't present in SoD.
If you want any more control than that, you'll need to either get WoG (latest WoG is called Era and WoG also requires SoD) and learn ERM scripting (unless you already know that) or get vcmi and either learn C++ coding (unless you already learned that) or talk to its dev team and wait. Or play around with some hex editor thing.
As for HD edition, people advise against it not because of some cult of the alternatives (or anything else that could be 'betrayed'), but because it lacks all those keyboard shortcuts, online lobby (?), option of faster animations, option of no popup windows when picking up some small treasures, random maps and some other features. And if you got used to those features in SoD or HotA with HD mod, then you will probably hate the experience of playing without them in HD edition. But if you somehow like the experience of playing HD edition despite all of its missing features, then why would anyone judge you for that?

Thanks both for Your support. After all, one can play HoMM even when he/she is old and has arthritis in both hands; that's how good the game is, and it will never become out of fashion, offering a lot of fun even in a distant future, I'm sure.
Some Internet page says: "Is HotA compatible with the High Definition modification for HoMM III (HD-mod)? HotA is fully compatible with HD-mod and is proven to work correctly under any settings." I must admit I am bad at math and computer skills, still don't know much about HotA, but at least I composed dozens of etudes, and they say piano uses math in all sorts of different ways; so I flirt with math from a distance, so to speak. Currently, I am writing prose manuscript for my plausible upcoming book; and I'll most probably try some time later to, first of all, find this downloadable HotA on the Internet and, hopefully, install it with HD version w/o any consequences. Unless I can convert my map/scenario from HoMM3 HD into HoMM3 and share it with You wonderful people, who appreciate the impact of HoMM3 and how it positively affects the mind and heart, something that some folks don't quite understand, being overly concerned for the future of their offspring, since the game can be quite addictive.
