Qs for Salamander
Do you agree battlefield tactics is only a third for mastery of HOMM3? Another third is the memorization of the spell damage functions and ALL the computer calculations such as skill progressions while the remaining third is about on map and castle building and creature growth logistics and planning?

That's a question for experienced MP players, as Maretti and company, last time I played online was 15 years ago. However, regardless what he answers, one thing is paramount for mastering anything, including Heroes, and that is time invested.
So, to jump the ladder : no gf, no sane food but only burgers, potato chips and sodas, not enough sleep, no social life, eyes fatigue, restricted vocabulary limited to colorful insults used when morale randomizer. List not exhaustive, anyone add here your experiences on the Heroes 3 mastery path.

Sal you did not seem to mention the most important factor. Work, do you need to work? If so how to get time for H3?

I managed to make it to top 100 in hota and from my experience the most important thing is to pick a few templates that you like and play exclusively on them, preferably every day. When you get bored and want to switch to a new map first try in in singleplayer, then have some games vs low ranked players and only when you know the map well you should go and have ranked games vs top players.

I was I think top 50 in h3. But Hota works on templates not fixed maps? Also are there lots of active players? When zone was around only 5 good players were around at any one time. Remaining no are noobs

So you still haven't checked the Hota HD mod lobby?
The lobby hosts around 2200 players during prime times every day. Obvioysly fixed maps can be played too, but there's really no purpose of playing them, random maps are much more suitable for multiplayer games. The RMG is simply that good nowadays.

Map movement is indeed very big part of the game, but I would rather focus on how the objectives are executed; eg optimal phasing of the game with minimal resources and how to maximize your turn, which chaining is obviously a big part of.

As said, if you're interested in multiplayer, there's literally no reason to not check is as thousands of others are already doing it. It literally makes no sense asking questions here, as cheking it out yourself only takes minutes.
Hit and Running is banned in terms of Tournament rules, which multiplayers are used as default; client simply won't let you choose the run button if it's the first turn, and you've already cast a spell.
Any forbidden forms of actions, such as quitting, cheating of any kind, or possibly simply ill-behaving can be reported and it's moderated pretty well afaik. Dishonorary behaving usually results in your lobby name's color changing (so people will likely avoid playing with you) and bans. Obviously players can always just make new usernames, but what usually happens is that when you play a lot, others will want to add you to their friend's list, so in the end you will have players you know and trust. People will also see how many other have you in their friendlist, also working as one way of showing others that you can be trusted as a player. Everything is done in-client.
