A.I.
I been spendin my time playin CIV 3. In a word, A.I.!!!!
It is without a doubt the best computer driven opponent that i've ever had the joy of playing. It's a great opp! With every patch the game gets better. Now i'm drooling because they've announced a new multi player expansion pack!! WWWWWWWWOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!
ya wonderin why i bring this up on the TOH board? I thinkin 3DO can learn a few things from Sid Meyers. Maybe they should sit down and take a look at how a real A.I. is done!
Anybody else know of any great games that had awsome A.I.'s ?

thanks for the memories
Remember the phalanx killing your iron clad in civ1? LOL.
Well I haven't played civ three yet because got so pissed at the civ 2 cheating like a MF. On the highest difficulty level, the computer gets any tech you have awhile after you get it. You just can't beat the thing soundly, and I like to be challenged but not so blatantly BS'ed by the a.i.
Many's the time I have come to the shores of an opponent that has been matching me tech for tech to find a basically undeveloped swamp. It's like finding a fusion reactor in a trailer park in rural Alabama. Once I got to Alpha Centauri (expansion pack) and colonized the whole thing and got all the killer tech, and wouldn't you know it, when I unleashed my magogs and 8-balls (LOL Sid Meier could use a lesson in game ambiance from NWC... and all we can do here is complain about how crappy UNICORNS look...LOL) the comp player had them too and was able to produce them out of his pissant economy at the same rate I could. Thanks for bringing back some funny memories.

you think?
Ive played civIII thoroughly. It 'cheats' to play better, so if that is called AI so be it. Also, there are far less variables in civIII than there is in heroes. It is far more difficult to make dynamic AI in homm3/4. People will argue against this, but thats how I feel.

Indeed!?

please do correct me if i'm wrong, every Game i've ever played stacks the odds against you as you move up through difficulty lvls. I.E. cheats. this includes HOMM. I not sure why it's such a bad thing when CIV3 does it? Every other game uses the same tactics pretty much to provide more challenge at higher lvls. I not sure what yer point is about the cheating?
I also never mentioned once anything about which game would be harder to creat an A.I. for. For the most part i totally agree that HOMM has way more gaming variables then not just CIV 3 but maybe any other game on the market. that said, they still completely dropped the ball with A.I.
I wish it was a case of the A.I. needing improving, but anybody who's done any testing will tell you it's like there isn't even an A.I.!! The game is unable to perform the most basic of tasks on it's own behalf. I have a feeling i will thoroughly enjoy the game when the multi patch is released, but till then it's a pretty piece of boring programming that needs the smarts added by a real player.
p.s. ya said it your self Ves, ya played the game thoroughly. Does that mean that maybe ya like it?
p.p.s. I still believe I'll be seein ya all in the homm 4 room when the patch comes out.

civ
Civ was indeed a great game, played it for countless hours, and the more I think about it, I was cheating too, reloading til I got a good map. All computer games cheat. It will be for our grandkids to play a truly intelligent computer opponent in any game as complex as homm. Also, in case everyone has forgotten, there were no real good homm3 singleplayer maps that didn't stack up "time-released" mega heroes or give the computer jacked up heroes/resources.

Civ 3 is indeed a great game. It is year 1300 and Babylon is the center of the world. Mighty Persia dared to launch surprise attack against one of the Babylonian coast cities few centuries earlier. Persepolis is captured and the once so mighty kingdom of Persia is reduced to few cities. Babylonian's great culture is without equal in the world and it's power is overwhelming to any nation either small or large. Babylonian's scientists have explored almost half of the world's current inventions and are selling them to foreign nations with outrageous prices. Whole world wonders what will be Babylon's next major move. Are they going to attack USA to make cinders of their most advanced rival? Or are they going to wipe their once-wartime ally Iroquois' nation out of the world map with their Cavalry?
My best rank that I have achieved in Civ 3 so far is Caesar the Magnificent (I hope I spelled that correctly).
About AI in the games, only Chess games have an AI that can rival even the toughest of the champions without cheating. And programmin AI to Chess is simpler than HoMM or Civ because there is less options

I knew before the game would be released that people would bash the h4 AI, they have since heroes2. The patch has helped, and frankly I never cared for the AI, since I prefer a real human opponent; its always funny when someone who has beaten the computer at expert or something thinks he can defeat real life players, only to find disappointment

chess
In a chess game with 20 turns played there are more possible positions than atoms in our universe.
Which means that no chess program will ever play perfectly.
Which means you just have to practice more, Motor
