How good compared to the other games do you think Olden Era will be?
Here's the game, you rank the Heroes games and insert Olden Era where you think it will be. For instance mine:
Best
Homm II
Homm III
Homm V
Olden Era
Homm IV
Homm VII
Homm I (It is a fine game, but Homm II replaces it in basically every way.)
Homm VI
Worst
I am cautiously optimistic for Olden Era even though I have little faith in Ubisoft and have seen a lot of red flags. That said if all they try to do is copy Homm III and fail, they will still be in the top 50% of games in the series.
What's your list and why do you feel the way you do about your ranking?

It seems welcome. I'd rate it somewhere between HoMM II and HoMM III. To win olden hearts it must have more atmospheric town screens. Map looks great, but town screens should be reworked in my book. Yes, it's just pictures... So thought the producers of HoMM VI & VII. Former even tried to save their game introducing real town screens. You know how that helped overall Town screen, it's a face of a town, and what a player remembers first when he thinks of a town.
Top-5 town screens as I rate them -
1. Rampart (just gorgeous)
2. Fortress
3. Tower
4. Castle
5. Stronghold

Impossible to rank before playing. I'm obviously hoping it'll be the best game ever, but it's nigh impossible to top HoMM3. Being better than the following 5, 4 & 2 is not honestly asking much. It just depends on the devs.

At this point j don't think it's possible to top Heroes 3 or 5 just because of the nostalgia factor (they say as much in one of the Steam of posts) but it looks like they plan to give them a run for their money at least. Impossible to say before we have more information though.

Why not? For me it already tops HoMM V. And the only reason why it doesn't top HoMM III now is town screens. HoMM III is a child of love. The developers just believed in their creation without much feedback (compared to nowaday's). But.. Olden Era seems to hear its audience, and I think, the game will be almost bug-free from start and implement all the years of gamers' feedback about playability. I tend to believe that mechanically it will be perfect. But I also want it to be nice as possible in graphics department. It's OK that I had no wow-effect when I first saw screenshots (I don't believe that wow-effect is repeatable; and I'm just a man in my fourties), still it's pretty solid and convincing to wishlist it. I didn't buy SoC, btw. This game made me wanna buy it, that speaks for itself.

I seriously want a good argument on how is H7 better than H6.
My hopes is that HOE will be find its place among H3 and H5

That boils down to H6 always being online and being lobotomized once it lost support.

Same here. I’m sold on the adventure map, and I prefer the art style over H5. Now, I just need them to nail the gameplay.

I was just replaying H6 and I absolutely cannot confirm the "lobotomized" part. Everything works as intended and you don't need to be afraid that losing connection means losing progress anymore.
Sure, you have less Avatars than you used to have but I have modded them back in.

Heroes 5
Heroes 3
HOE
Heroes 6
Heroes 4
Heroes 7
Didn't play Heroes 1 and 2 long enough to form a solid opinion.
My expectations are pretty tempered with this ranking. I naturally want it to be the next best Heroes, but that's unlikely. I do want it to be better than 3 at least, but even if it ends up around that same ballpark, it would still be a good entry in my opinion.

Given current knowledge, OE looks more or less like improved/fixed HoMM5. Just to make it clear — HoMM5 is a fine game, and I played it a lot in its glory days. The thing is that New World Computing was able to make charming games that even my wife (definitely not a gamer) can enjoy and play with me — the lore / atmosphere / aesthetics are perfect. HoMM5, while in theory being an improvement over HoMM3 gameplay-wise, wasn't able to reproduce this charm. After seeing the existing video materials, I don't believe the OE will either. It will be a great game for strategy game fans, but my wife won't connect with the generic fantasy / warcrafty outlook. Hopefully, I will be proven wrong

Of course we all hope for the best and want Olden Era to be as good a title as possible. I don't think it can measure up to H3 or H5, but for different reasons than you might think.
With exception of H4 and H6, we have only seen attempts to capture the magic of H3. Sometimes it worked better, other times they failed. But H3 was a lightning in a bottle, created by seasoned professionals deeply stated in culture, history, fantasy and nerddom.
It is not the gameplay, the factions or units that make Heroes 3 the beloved title that still holds up, it is its narrative consistency and the authenticity of the stories and world as a whole.
An attempt to re-create it will fail. The only way a worthy Heroes can succeed is with a strong vision and flawless execution. The devs obviously don't have the budget for a grand magnum-opus, but with a strong enough vision they can lay the foundation for a revival of the series.
Attempts to make Heroes into a AAA game failed for various reasons, and I believe Heroes needs to regenerate itself from a smaller scale. The best we can hope for is to keep the scope small, but keep it strong and polished. So that the game can grow over time, new factions, mechanics and units are added and grow with us as a player base.
Therefore, I don't want to compare the games. It is like being asked to tell what is your favourite child.

This is an excellent point and what I was trying to convey. If the devs manage to recapture the "magic" of the experience, which is approachable and has depth, the game will hit the jackpot. Regardless of whatever gameplay is features.

I must state here that I find it funny so many people complain about the genericness of later homm-games - when h3 was extremely generic itself.
I completely agree that it had a charm that later titles lacked, though. But that did not lie in uniqueness, imo. But, as you stated, in that it was extremely well and consistently executed. Which is where especially H4 failed, for example.

Really? Could you share games that are of similar style to HoMM3? I would love to play them
