Assuming you could get 10 or even 12 skills per hero, do you think Learning would become a must-have skill, if it gave a lot more XP?
Getting 10 or 12 skills to expert would take some time, but it could be offset by taking (a buffed) Learning early, helping you to learn and master more skills.

With 10 or 12 skills there would "be more room" for Fire or Water Magic and maybe other decent skills like Intelligence, Archery or Tactics.

How would you guys feel about 10 or 12 skills and Learning possibly being a must-have skill?

Mm, I'd say the best they could do with it would be to make it give a daily amount of XP (say 100/200/500). Sure, it wouldn't be a good pick for main heroes, but it would be a great one for garrison heroes.

@MattII I've tried that with manipulated sphinx blessings. It's fun more then useful... Whatever the value you use, after less then a month you will be getting less then a level per week.

@Phoenix4ever No amount of experience gain is worth a Secondary Skill in 10 or 12.
Just make your list of priorities, then see where Learning falls. Then think what it would need to give you so it ranked 12 or 10... I wouldn't pick the one from WoG if I couldn't add any other skill after 10, not sure about 12.

@Bloodsucker
At some point Learning should be worth it, right? Let's say you get double XP at Expert, would it still not be worth it to you?
Of course it depends on if you can get 8, 10 or 12 skills, but at some point Learning should become a skill you actually want, right?

In the WoG you can get 20 or 28 skills, if I remember right.. I rarely used such script.. A very rare! How? A normal 10 skills plus commander's artifacts.. I checked on list, its 10 artifacts mean 20 skills.. A commander's artifact gives a random secondary skill..

Remember if you see matter like a artifact, spell, creature or secondary skill is OP, so you nerf.. An example of

Learning gives 250/500/1000 exp. point in a day to hero when Estates, and I think that 5/10/15 or 20 primary skills not expert 50% also 10/20/30, not 15 or 20%, and then specialty 5%.. If you think OP, its good and realism skill, because you nerf my Learning.. If you see poor, so you bluff or remove it means bad.. Simple psychology! If you know about thing..

Carlsen started playing a like chess engine.. When you start too?

@Phoenix
That's actually a good idea, if you do not limit the #of skills eventually learning is viable

If he/she is a might hero, adding sorcery instead would be useless because you would spend you cast turns on buff spells (unless you play to high levels where there is little distinction between might/magic)
And same with magic heroes, adding archery or offense is minimal if you rely on summon meat shields, you would choose sorcery specialist and the 3 extra levels granted by learning further boost your specialisation

@Phoenix4ever The thing is 200% of the experience would be great early but still represented less then three levels when you get to the really high levels so it depends of the maps you play. I'm sure it doesn't pay of for any of Maygwan's maps for HotA I've tried.

Curse! I made a thread, but I accidentally pressed to close page..

Ok one Learning then.. Think about mapmakers, but they created ticks, etc themselves.. For their game If they create Learning.. So great game! Because of Ukraine between Russia, Hitler, and even chess openings.. Player must be experienced from Learning.. Ok I show you!

Ok you can see Quest Guard.. It says/reads: "The lands beyond are very dangerous.  The guards eye you dubiously, but agree to let you by when you have achieved the experience level 11."

And you can see 4 x 4k of Peasants plus Mausoleum! Fooled player run around the map.. When first always scout heroes! If some Quest says 11, so scout hero arranges to your hero, and later on scout hero becomes town guardian, not "main hero".. Simple! In WoG/ERA script is a good, what Matt thought garrison hero..

No worry! My Puzzler map, it Quest Guard says 10, not 11.. But I meant speciality maps, so Learning beat all..

I think Learning as a skill is just very conceptually flawed. There's no way to balance it where it isn't either useless or mandatory. The only reason it works in Heroes 5 is because it isn't just the skill itself, its the secondary abilities that the tree enables you to learn. Even then it borders on mandatory, even for might heroes that generally get much less use out of the subordinate skills and would prefer to have some other set of subordinate skills because effectively getting 50% more levels is just that strong.

In heroes 3 where there aren't any subordinate skill trees you can either make it not worth the 3 level ups and skill slot or you can make it give you so much extra experience that you get significantly higher stats than your enemy, in which case you have to have it or you're at a huge disadvantage like with logistics.

Heroes 3 skills in general are sure something:

Logistics and Wisdom: Mandatory

Learning, Eagle eye, First Aid, Luck, Leadership, resistance, Sorcery: Borderline unfixable as they are currently imagined.

Schools of Magic: Worst Magic system in the franchise

Estates, Scouting, Mysticism, intelligence, Armourer, Offence, Archery, Diplomacy: Workable with tweaking.

Ballistics, Tactics, Scholar, Necromancy: Actually interesting game changers, though Tactics slows combat down hugely and Necromancy is hard to balance.

Artillery, Navigation: Hyper specific use case.

Pathfinding: Decent

Hm, what if, instead of a fixed amount per day, heroes received an amount of experience that was percentage of the difference between their current level (the minimum of their current level) and the next level. So for 10% it would be 100/100/120/140/160/180... etc.
