Placement during siege
When defending during one of the rare occasions when the computer attacks me in my castle, the placement of my four forward units appears to be inconsistent. Sometimes they are right up against the wall (exposed to enemy attacks), and sometimes they are a space back from the wall (safe).
This cost me a nice stack of magi when I thought I could throw poison spells at the enemy from safety beyond the wall. However when combat began, they were adjacent to the wall instead, and were immediately set upon by a stack of black dragons. Southern-fried mage, anyone?
How can you tell if your troops will be placed next to the wall or back from it at the start of combat?

I don’t think it is possible. You can put them in the 2nd row maybe that will help.

If you put them to the second row they go to the towers.

It may have something to do with the different sizes of the creatures. If you turn on the grid during a combat, you would notice a dwarf or a sprite occupies a diameter of only 3 squares. A hero would occupy a 4-square diameter. An elemental, 5-square. A hydra, 7-square. Larger-sized creatures might be a few squares closer to the wall.

Magi are spell casters and some of their spells require line of sight, that is the reason they are placed next to wall. Also, every shooter is placed next to wall likewise. In general grunts aren't next to wall unless they are too large. If you want to place some units to towers place them to the slots 2, 4 and 6.

So spell-casters/ranged units are always placed adjacent to the wall (i.e. on the battlements)? Then they will always be exposed to enemy line-of-sight attacks, whether they be in the front or on the towers. Unless, of course, you haven't fully upgraded to the castle.
I guess the best option then is to start spell-casters off on a tower, and move them off at earliest convenience if you want to use a non line-of-sight spell.
Thanks for the responses ..

I think
it is actually a great deal harder to defend a castle than it was previously.. for instance you have no arrow towers as an extra anymore.
I do this things to apear to be stacked in favour of the attacker.

But then again you are safe if you are away from the walls. That's new

not really. the gate only lasts for three rounds usually and then the attackers come hoarding in.

The gate is generally destroyed in two to three hits of 50 damage each. Not that strong. Also, If you have strong spellcasters (ie, water elementals) the can potentially wipe out whichever stcks are in position on top of the tower.. the safest place is just behind the tower as nobody can get to you easily.

but then the walls are useless. the whole point of the walls is to protect the defenders while the attackers are losing troops trying to get in. if all the ranged troops hide behind the towers, then they are of no use. i like using several stacks of one genie when attacking a castle because they can immobilise the ranged units that are in line of sight and thus make them totally useless. then, i can use the mage (if im playing order) to cast poison on the enemy and force them to either come out and fight or wither away inside the castle. However, this tactic doesn't work against undead units. What do you think?

Castles are much easier to defend now, why yesterday my castle got attacked by a lvl 25 hero and a bigger army the only thing i had was 14 efreets and 30 minotaurs and some other piddles. And i mauled him as he put everything in the moat where i did hefty damage against it. But thats only because the com so stupid.
hmm about losing your shooters would changing your formation to close not stop this happening, not tested it but it seems to make sense try changing your formation
