Scouting is the best skill... No doubt about it
Scouting is definitely the BEST skill in Heroes4. It allows you to flag all those mines and creature dwellings without having to fight the creatures guarding those places. Also, you can gain lots of free experience by using the Stealth skill. Pathfinding and increased scouting radius are also very nice!
In the map I just finished ("The Dragon's Wrath"), I managed to flag 3 gold mines and several other mines very early in the game, thanks to the wonderful stealth skill. I played the map on Expert level and got a pheonix rating.
I'll choose Scouting skill over all other skills any day!

I mean the set of scouting skills. You can't have Grandmaster Stealth unless you know a few other scouting skills.
The superiority of the scouting skills also means thief is the best hero type. On the Zanfa XL map, my thief hero reached level 14 within the first month w/o having to fight any battle!

Its a useful skill, but on its own you won't have any magic, and your fighting will suck, so the hero will be pretty useless in combat.. good on the adventure map, but not enough to go by on its own.
And since stealth requires the hero to be alone, without his army the hero is even more useless in combat. At least you can survive battles if you have an army.
So I would say, if you had to choose only one skill set, scouting isn't enough for the hero to do with on his own. Probably get combat or a magic tree (Nature for the summoning). There's not much point being able to move around the map hidden or over longer distances if you can't siege a castle or fight many battles..

Well, it's true that scouting skills alone will not win you battles. But by mastering scouting skills, you can flag all those mines and grab all those powerful artifacts w/o any casualty. This allows you to build your towns and raise a powerful army alot faster. What's better than grabbing that Adamantine Armor behind 50 Black Dragons AND earn like 5000 free experience points just by using the Stealth skill?
Mastering the scouting skills makes everything much easier.

On champion difficulty thief's as starting classes can't lose. The best class of 2 primary skills is ranger with combat and scoiuting skills. Get some regen artifacts and potions of immortality and your hero CAN take out ai armies by himself.

I finished that Zanfas's Challenge map in Month 4. It was on Expert difficulty level and the rating was unicorn. Not too bad...

Try it on champion; thief just levels up faster; same result but Mantis or higher rating.
