this is a stupid question but what do you like when you get a chest
in a hurry cant type right

I think the same rule of thumb from Heroes 2-3 stll applies: if you can get 1000 or more experience from the chest, take experience. If it's 500 EXP, then you probably should just take the gold.

always go for the gold, much better.
It was the case in heroes3, its the same now.

A little bit more detailed:
You will need the gold much harder early on than experience (and likely not just early on with only 1000 gold/day for each city now). Its much more important to get more creatures to back up your hero than go up a level or two. And of course to get asap all available creature buildings.
Experience you will gain anyway by fighting guards and opponents. And after a while leveling up is so expensive in xp that its not worthwile to take xp from chests.

If I have a thief hero, then I usually choose EXP over Gold more often. It pays to learn higher level of Steath as quickly as you can.

Of course it depends on map and game, but in campagne i'll take often money, because i don't want to take immediately the maximum level and the fight for nothing...

I disagree with you, this really depends on the map and heroes !
For me, when I play thief, I prefer to take exp for a moment in order to take mines ... after that of course we need money ... but one more time this choice has to be taken considering the map, heroes and ennemies !

Early in the game I usually do first chest EXP second chest gold and so on, depending on how much free gold is lying around and what needs to be built of course.
Early EXP is good for getting Path&Logistics upgrades sooner which IMO is a must.
Speed is everything!

i hear alot now the argument of the thief for getting exp instead of gold to get his pathfinding and stealth skills up.
Yes, for a thief i agree it is good to get his skills up asap, but i also hope that the thieves abilities will be tuned down, as they are simply unbalancing.
For all other cases its still the gold for me.

You really cannot have just one answer
It all depends on ALOT of factors. Whether you need the experience or money, whether it's easy difficulty or champion, whether your hero will gain a lvl, whether it's early or late game etc...
