Stuttering

This is a very serious topic for me. I am a stutterer. I am taking speech therapy right now to improve my stuttering. I am just wondering if anyone else stutters. I think that this could be a place for people to talk about stuttering which is an important part in the acceptance of stuttering.

One of the things that I have done with my speech therapists was going to the mall and asking total strangers about stuttering. Most recently I made a 20 min presentation about stuttering as my final exam in health class.

If you have any questions about stuttering I could answer them very easily.

Here is just some basic info about stuttering:

    What is Stuttering?

Stuttering is the disfluency in speaking caused by tension in the articulators such as lips, tongue, and larynx.

Why do some stutters sound different than others?

There are three distinct types of stuttering: Repetitions, Prolongations, and Blocks.

    What causes stuttering?

There isn’t any one specific cause for stuttering. It comes from a variety of factors that are different for everyone. Most stutterers have genetic predispositions to speak less fluently than others. This is not the cause of stuttering! It depends on the person’s experiences and personality as to whether or not it will develop into a habit.

    What are Avoidances?

An avoidance is when a stutterer does not accept the fact that they stutter, so they avoid the situation of having to speak completely. This is caused by the fear of stuttering. To name a few emotions, there is embarrassment, frustration, shame, and fear of acceptance.

What treatments are available for stuttering?

There are speech therapists that guide the sufferer to learn how to speak more easily and eliminate most strenuous disfluencies. There is no 100% cure for stuttering, because everyone stutters. It can be kept under control and reduced to a comfortable level for the patient. This is done by practicing an easier way of speaking. At first one will slowly initiate the voice box and ease into the word. With consonants there will be light pressure with the lips or tongue.

    What is a Fake Stutter?

A fake stutter is exactly what it says. It is used to help the patient create some tolerance of their stuttering. This is very important in the acceptance of stuttering. The other benefit is learning to have better control over one’s articulators. This will give the ability to feel tension in the articulators and control the amount of tension.

    What is proprioception?

Proprioception in general is knowing where one’s body is in time and space. It relates to stuttering as a term to know where one’s articulators are in time and space. With proprioception one feels and concentrates on the articulators. This will enable the person to feel any potential tension it occurs and they will be able to ease into the word, because the stutterer is consciously controlling their articulators.

    What makes stuttering worse?

Like with most things people have good days and bad days with stuttering. Stress, nervousness or other types of anxiety, and fatigue are the most common things that make stuttering worse. People tend to stutter much more when under something called time pressure. For example, you are in a restaurant and a waitress brings me my soda and walks off. You only have a limited amount of time to say thank you before she is gone. If you have a serious block where no sound comes out then won’t be heard. This can be very frustrating to the stutterer.

This was the outline that I handed out to every student in the class. My speech therapist recorded it too.

A professional phorum like this one can always help anyone in need. Indeed you come to the right place. Please sit down, take a little nap or coffee and read some magazines. We make our patients feel the best, if not the last before the truth comes alive. Sit down over there - please wait - tighten your belt - open your mouth - now sleep - or just drink the * coffee *.

Umm...

To put it in short, stuttering is a speech problem and is usually inborn. Stuttering can be controlled to a certain extend.

There was an article in Discover Magazine recently about stuttering. If you look on their website, check out the past 2-3 months issues, and you should see it.

Research suggests that some of those who stutter might be trying to "listen" to themselves when they talk; this causes a "loop" while they try to change/modify how they're talking, rather than just "spitting it out" like the rest of us.

Anyhow, it's a good article, thought you might be interested.

HEY! DO YOU GUYS HAVE NO SOUL? honestly, i dunno how you can be insensitive to him being a stutterer.   I mean, jesus. Kinda inhuman i think.

Because lately i've been stuttering... As in other posts this would be because of my old gf.  Whatever she did inside my head when we broke up, i started to stutter.  Its not serious, and not constant, maybe 5-10 times a day, which isn't alot at all.. But its still there, and this is like 2 years, so i think this is indeed a very usefull post.

I never really realized it until my brother pointed it out to me.  but then it hit me i'd been doing this since she broke up with me.  Anyways, i think mine would be because of stress, anxiety etc.....  GOOD POST!! if we had a stutterer for a mod, red sox would get a QP, but since these people appear to be normal then he won't.

Everybody is born normal.  Only the gifted overcome it.

Thank you very much Tortoise. I'm glad someone who understands is willing to defend me. It's a little out of place in this forum, but I wouldn't critize this stuff.

btw, my stuttering has been more active lately after a period of like 6 months being nearly stutter free.

Note: Just found out that we could look at all of our posts now.

I'm not sure there is a difference. Everyone has disfluencies when they talk it's just that people who stutter develop difficulties emotionally and physically resulting in habits of tension in the mouth and throat causing stuttering. In bad cases of stuttering people will tense other parts of their body to in a struggle to get the words out.

But to answer you question. Any kind of disfluency when speaking can is stuttering. And every case of stuttering is unique to the person.

Even though I don't stutter, I have a lot of twouble saying Rs, I know whewe youw coming fwom.  I'd hate to have to pass out sheets of papew in class that wewe basically saying that "I'm a bad speakew.  Pity me.".  AND my speech teachew doesn't help; my family likes the way I speak nowmally, instead of the way my speech teacher says it, so I guess I'm not as bad as I thought.  Or I have a weally bad speech teachew.  Pity me.
