Put your strongest creatures in the first line and if you have a good army you won't lose any creatures.
I had Gold Golems, Titans and Genies in the front line, but lost a golem against a standing army consisting of only walkers. I know that had I managed the fight, the enemy forces would have never even gotten to my forces, much less killed any of them.
I use the genies to create an illusion, which the walkers concetrate on while my titans and halflings take them out at range. My normal troops never leave their starting place and the enemy never reach them.
If the illusions would stick around after the battle, I'd be growing with each fight like necropolis does<G>.

Dale.. I agree with you.. but 2 me xp is very important.. and for a gold golem or some other creature I won't fight every weak neutral army so.. I'd choose quick combat.

well, in multiplayer it could make a difference having a little less golems for example. But it's nearly impossible to lose againt the comp. It only happened once... where the comp had black dragons on week three, he invaded my castle and I had nothing to defend it, since I was out of money buying the dragon golem factory, so I couldn't buy creatures.

I already lost a Dragon Golem to a ridiculous army consisting of thousands Dwarves! I surely wouldn't lost anything if I had managed the combat on my own. Never hit the Quick Combat butom again (Sorry for my bad english).

I have never lost a 4th level creature against a neutral army.. in the worst case I've lost a 1st or 2nd level creature. I don't know.. maybe the neutral armies like me.. I play at advanced game.

What town did you play the most? I play with order, and the Dragon Golem is the only faster unit they can get. If you use magi and genie, the only other melee unit is the dwarf, wich is very slow. I think the AI must send the Dragons foward and they are the only unit that engages in the fight, so one of them died. Itīs the only thing I can think of...

If you want to know why the AI loses creatures in these 'quick combat' situations, try reloading, going into the fight normally, and hitting AutoCombat. Then watch what the AI does. Frankly, it's mostly pretty shocking; here are my high level heroes, with GM archery, and they pause to cast 'bless' or something like it on a unit which has already acted that turn. (Well, it's not always that bad, but they *do* almost invariably cast bless spells when the fight would be over quicker if they fired arrows.) And there are my melee units, charging out where they can get hurt, where they can be ganged up on. The AI *does* seem to wait them before sending them out, but because the heroes and other spell-capable troops (eg Genies) haven't dealt all the damage they're capable of, the melee troops have more enemies to handle. Even dragon golems will take damage when there are multiple dwarf stacks having a go at them!
There's a difference in strategy between playing to win and playing to minimize losses. No-one ever taught the AI the latter.

A frien told me about quick comat.. and I played with order and chaos.. and I don't like Dragon Golems, I like the Titans because of theis range attack..

When you're planning to quit the game, save (and quit) at the end of the turn, not at the start. This decreases the risk of "one more turn".

I think I ought to try that one, as it beats my wife waking me up from the computer chair still trying to get in "just one more turn"
Now where is that save command again.......
due to lack of saving (not needed much with the new autosaves) I have not remembered to check this out, but I thought I saw that you could save your game in the middle of a battle? Maybe I was just dreaming, hafta check it out someday

u can save the game in a battle. And auto combat isint that bad in campaigns cos u can just send your high lv heroes to go around killing everything.

I just ran into a situation where quick combat would always lose me my might hero, but when I controled it, nothing lost.
I was fighting a single dragon golem with lots of genies etc. In auto, my hero charged up and attempted to whack the dragon -- and got turned into a tombstone. I would hold her back, toss ice bolt with the genies and dead golem!

Towngate Spell
I just discovered another use of the towngate spell. In the final stages of a game when I have a very strong force, the AI causes the enemy to try to avoid them. OTOH, they will attempt to capture an undefended town. The AI is smart enough to realize how far you can walk normally, but once they get close enough you can use towngate to put yourself within range for a killing strike.

Most people forget the halfling ability to do increased damage on 4th level creatures. Remember to shoot them when with your halflings.

This halfling ability seems to be compatible with the david's sling (+50% damage vs level4), but not with the slayer spell.
Quite useful knowledge, isn't it?

Playing when you have basic nature magic
if fighting any kind of ranged attackers(outside of seiges)a good idea is to summon sprites and send them in front of the shooters with out attacking them and they will waste a turn either moving forward past them or killing them. good idea agianst any kind fo strong archers especially if they have high #'s

when fighting medium to large melee units
when fighting medium to large sized melee units such as dwarves or any other slow units(melee) here is a good strategy. but first you must have at least one or two rather strong shooters. move your melee units from where ever they are all the way to the end of your side of the screen.wait with your archers until the enemy moves then shoot(and if your hero has archery shoot 2) reapeat this until they get too close and then unleash with your melee units
