Elric...I told you to stick to your darts or lawn bowls. Lets keep it an aussie rules thread...not an aussie rules bashing thread.

 Ok. history lesson
In 1858 Tom Wills developed a game and Codeified it as Aussie Rules, the first football code in the world to have done so, having grown up among Aboriginies in western Victoria tom developed a game  game using a rugby ball for off season Criketers, from an ancient aboriginal coroborie called Marn Grook, a game played over some two miles at a cracking pace where a balled was kicked and passed and participants were seen to leap some five to six feet in the air to catch from that first game in 58 on a large ground the Melbourne football club was founded to become the worlds oldest club [ fact] From the book a game of our own]
At this time football of sorts was played in great Britain but it wasn't till 1862 That Football or association football was Codified to define itself away from rugby, this happened in a tavern in Covent garden.
Aussie rules is older than gaelic and may have been bought to Ireland by returning Irish miners but this is speculation
after reading this thread I could see that some people find themselves free to comment on matters with which they have absolutely no Idea so I hope you take something from this and learn the rules too so that you can also have the privalage in saying that you know the only football code that is not only the oldest but has no connection to Soccer

Whenever I think of Aussie Rules, I think of this old news story from May 2002... LOL

Quote:
Player Banned After Testicle Biting
MELBOURNE (Reuters) - Former Sydney Swans Australian Rules player Peter Filandia was suspended for 10 matches on Wednesday after pleading guilty to biting an opponent's testicles during a game last week.

Filandia, 31, was playing for Port Melbourne against Springvale in the Australian Football League's feeder competition, the Victorian Football League (VFL).

St. Kilda AFL player Chad Davis, playing for Springvale, suffered a perforated scrotum and lost a small amount of blood, a club doctor told the VFL tribunal in Melbourne. He also needed a tetanus injection.

Filandia told the tribunal he could not breathe when he became entangled with Davis and bit him as a reflex action.

However, Filandia did not know which part of his opponent's body he had bitten, he said.

"It was a split-second decision," Filandia told reporters after the hearing.

Tribunal chairman Eddie Power ordered Filandia to undergo player counseling before resuming playing.

In a similar case last year, former rugby league international John Hopoate was banned by the Australian National Rugby League for 12 weeks after poking a finger up the backside of an opponent.

Hopoate was sacked by his club Wests-Tigers but joined rival club Northern Eagles in June 2001

In Canada Aussie Rules is something we can catch sometimes on TV at 4am, so not so very popular

But if I had to root for a team, it'd be Collingwood!

We have clearly matured as a team and are ready to go to the grand final. I find it odd however how you can call us chokers when Collingwood made it to the grand final two years in a row and two years in a row got thumped by Brisbane... Plus this year they didnt even make the 8!

Personally I can't stand aussie rules.
Stupid bloody game, kick the ball to a bunch of guys who jump all over each other to get to the ball.
You can even climb up the back of someone to mark the ball for a free kick but if you miss the ball then it's a free kick to the other side, work that one out ROFL!
If you kick the ball out on the full it's a throw in by the ref but if they think you might have done it on purpose it's a free kick to the other side LMAO!!
I mean come on what sort of rules are these? Did they pick them out of a hat?
Don't get me started on the STATS.
They have just intoduced a new stat called Clangers ROFLMAO!!!
As far as I can work out Clangers are for bad kicks or something ROFL!

ok if you mark the ball its a mark. if you drop the ball, its play on.

if you kick the ball out on the full its a free kick to other team, if it goes out bouncing, its a throw-in. if the ball was diliberrately hit out to stop the opposition getting it, its a free kick.

clangers are mistakes made by players that shouldnt have normally happened

please know the rules before you laugh at them please...

P.S im a mad crows fan, and although this season was a bit of a shocker, we will be back!

as much as id like swans to win (i lived in sydney most of my life), i dont think they can do it. i think the only team that can beat brisbane are the Power.

however, we smashed the Lions just before the GF, and then got smashed back. maybe the same will happen for the Saints. Besides, theyve only one it once in '66!

yes. but thats the.. (dont say the word)... colly.... wob..  i cant say it. but at least we made it to the grand final twice in two years, and at least we have won it before. the most ever, i think.

oh wait, we only got thumped by brisnuts in 2003, in 2002 it was under 2 goals difference! thats not a thumping!

Ok the Lions will probably create history and be the greatest team ever or whatever. I dont really see anybody beating the depth they have in their elite squad.

However Sydney in my opinion do have a chance, they are the only team to consistantly beat Brisbane even at the Gabba (and that is saying something). Port dont have a chance. They are chokers. They beat Geelong, but if you ask me, geelong isnt the team they are made out to be. Geelong have been playing good football recently but they have been playing to their limits. other teams have not, and so during finals, they are going to get smashed.
