green dot now stands out. good job
i was reading over the news articles at the AOH site and was wondering if you could make a little headline at the top of the main page
something basic like
"Heroes V release date delayed. Read More!
something like that so everyone that views the site knows what is going on at AOH
yes?no?maybe?

We do have the last news time/date displayed, but the title is a good idea. I'll see if that can be done without damaging the layout.

idea bounce
Under the current system, we are only allowed 1 custom avatar per lifetime/username. Many members choose their custom avatar soon after obtaining their second yellow star. However, when members hang around here for quite a while, they change over time. This is especially true of younger members. The avatar you choose in 2006 at age 15 may not be what you want to represent yourself in 2008 at age 17. There are other factors as well. Romana switched avatars after becoming a mother but was limited to the set list because her "scary" avatar was her one-and-only custom choice. In my own case, I picked my avatar before learning how to use Google Image Search to find out where this thing came from (answer: my modest and elegant androgyne is actually a battle-happy cyborg with big breasts and bigger guns. ).
Suggestion: Change the custom avatar rule to one custom avatar a year, rather than one a lifetime.
Considerations: A year could be measured from either 1 January for all members, or from registration dates for individual members, whatever is most convenient for Val. A year is long enough that people won't be flippant about their choices, long enough that they will stay honest with their image (as Val puts it), but short enough for people to express their *current* personality, tastes and style, not to mention improved artistic skills for the adventurous. No carry-over -- if you don't pick a new custom this year, you don't get to choose two next. Members who vanish would, obviously, not bother to take advantage of more custom avatars. Active members who do select a new custom avatar every year would gradually leave a trail of older avatars, increasing the standard selection for new members. The system would be connected to longevity in the forum, which means neither spamming nor QP-hunting would accelerate it.
Feasible?

I've never seen myself move away from 1 custom avatar per user per lifetime, but what you say does make sense. One custom avatar per year per member is not that much work for me, even if it is 100+ avatars per year, it's a way of saying thanks to long-time members. As you say, the old custom avatars would stay for other members to select, with perhaps an exception of shield avatars and people's own faces.
It would be based on the calendar year, and custom avatar would be named like Khaelo2006. And yes, there are no credits for unused avatar changes, and people are still encouraged to keep their identity or something similar to it.
I do new avatar uploads approximately once per month, so as before avatars would accumulate until the ava day.
This is now open at New Avatars Recap. I just ask people to respect my time by only submitting avatars that they want to use for at least several months.

Got 2 more things that bug me a lot :(
I haven't been here that long so I do not know if those things were already discussed but they are really a pain in the *** .
1) Why can't you delete your thread by yourself?
If a person has made some useless thread and when he read it after posting it he realized how moronic the thread is and what people might think of him if they read it. So he tries to delete it to save himself from the humiliation and to his surprise oh oh you can't!
It just says contact the moderator if you want this thread removed or something like that... So you have to go through all that procedure of contacting the mod and begging him to delete your stupid thread and humiliate yourself by doing so. Not everyone has the guts in him to ask the mod to do that and it is just sad.
What I might suggest is to give the thread owner a week from the post date to be able to delete his post if he sees it's useless and not getting any attention from the community. This could save a heck load of mod job and clear a lot of useless threads on the long run by the owners themselves.
2) After the 1st vote in a poll thread you can't edit the starting post .
What if a person makes a really annoying spelling mistake or forgets some important info that is required to get this poll underway and some enthusiastic voter has already voted for one of the options, you can't edit the post . It says the poll has already started so no editing mister! Maybe it's done for so that people won't edit the given options but what about the post itself? Can't it be devided in two parts that the one with the message about the poll is going to be editable while the given options will remain uneditble. That is still bad though you can make mistakes een in the voting options but still half is better than none.
Again I do not know if this suggestions were already discussed but those things really bug me a lot.
So thanks.

Quote: 1) Why can't you delete your thread by yourself?
the reason for this would be that certain threads which are hundreds of posts long can be deleted by members too easily. so in a quick moment of anger alot of damage can be done. furthermore if the thread has several longs posts. the people who wrote posts, especially those long posts, the time they spent writing those posts would now be wasted
quite understandable to not give members this ability
2) After the 1st vote in a poll thread you can't edit the starting post
yes. this is because u may edit the poll options to ur advantage.
but i do agree that something should be done. allow person to edit the post, and not the poll, would be ideal

nice pick up. i just read "2 things that bug me" and the bold part and started posting
but still with your suggestion, some threads could have those long posts in that week.
what i suggest is an add on to ur idea. after a week, no more deletion by the thread starter. but even if the poster does delete the thread within that first week, the thread isnt actually deleted but moved to a hidden mod forum. in this forum a mod can decide whether or not the thread should be deleted properly
now my idea
basically 1 more poll option. instead of 5 poll choices we should have 6. with H5 coming out soon there is going to be a lot of "fav creature" and "best town threads and with 6 towns, 6 poll options is only logical
so i propose that we get 1 more poll option into those poll threads here at HC

TNT
Delete Threads
I think it was like that once and was changed because people deleted threads in which others had posted stuff that was dear to them. This can't be solved by a timeframe, I fear, and making it dependent on the number of posts doesn't solve it, either. I think you should leave it to the mods.
Poll Head Editing
Being able to edit the head but not the poll labels would be great. You know I know.
If I'd make a poll right now, I'd: 1. post the description and the poll. 2. Pray TNT won't post and vote before my flood protect is over. 3. Make a second post with the description. 4. (Still praying) delete the description from the first post, leaving only a title and the poll. You then have the uneditable poll in the first post and an editable description in the second post.

Deleting threads. That feature was disabled for a good reason - it can be abused very easily.
Editing polls. Authors need to put more care and planning in. Perhaps I will add a note that reminds them about what happens once the first vote is in. Altering the poll text in any way makes it a different poll. There are spelling corrections, but you should try making a script that will detect whether it is a spelling correction or an edit
Poll options - you'll be pleased to know I was thinking about it this week, and I'm thinking of 10
UPDATE: Moderators can now easily change thread subjects in the forums they moderate, so ask away if there are essential changes needing to be made.
smiley is now inserted properly by the kookabar, 6 new icons found on post reply page added to new thread and edit post pages too.
I'm quite overwhelmed with a few projects right now, so there will be a little dellay before finalising the post editing/deleting rules.
Another tweak: editing a post will now redirect you to the thread page which your post is on, instead of the forumdisplay page.
