Heroes I
Being a fan 'n all of the Heroes series, I played Heroes2,2gold,III,armaggedon's,SOD,and IV and I haven't played Heroes I - not until last week. So this one is for you who had played Heroes I...
My oppinion is that, for a game that old ('94 I think...) it's playable and it's a lot like the 2nd version.
It was funny too... I cracked myself up seeing the dragons: they were almost pink and very fat (probably they were lazy too and stared at the TV all day in their black tower ), the faeries were funny too...
anyway what do you think about Heroes I looking back?

It's the funniest game ever... Fat and purple dragons, fat orcs, purple trolls, bold-headed elves and so many more. And the battle has them all in such a large scale!

Heroes I was the first heroes game that I have ever played (back in 1998/1999). I thought some of the creatures looked cool. I especially liked the yippy yellow griffins with the dog collars and the ogres who looked like cave giants and 'bonked' their enemies with their clubs.

Yeah, a real classic!!
I still have it installed on my hard disk, although I haven't managed to play it since my migration to WinXP (maybe someday I'll make a MS-DOS boot-up disk to rescue it an other old games).
At first glance there seems to be little changes between HOMM1 and HOMM2, due to the look-a-like interfaces, but the differences become evident when you're playing, specially for the lack of secondary skills.
The transition from HOMM1 to HOMM2 and later to HOMM3 is the best example I can recall of a continuing saga: it shows at a grandmaster level how to take a quite good game and trim it to perfection increasing all the aspects but keeping loyal to the initial spirit. And that spirit is what we must thank to HOMM1.

About the good sequeling... I think there should be a little less diferences between H3 and 4. That's why I don't consider H4 a sequel to the Heroes series. Just like Warlords and Warlords Battlecry.

Apart from yet again the excellent music.
The next best thing about the game was the Huge Graphics.
And I mean HUGE graphics. They were excellent.

I like HMM1... You can see face of each unit in the battle... but if I'm not mistaken you can't go out of your castle walls during siege defense. That *****!
And Lord Woock, you see, it's wrong to make all the sequels just an addition. If 3DO would go this way in Heroes VII we'd get THOUSANDS of different creatures/artifacts/spells... You just HAVE to make something really new. I don't like H4 also, but I think it's still better than increasing and increasing and increasing the amount of units and arts and spells...

Well, I didn't say I only wanted more and more creatures. IMHO they shouldn't make so many creatures in HoMM3, and add a bit more detail to the ones from H2. One thing I really HATE about H4 is that isometric view thing. Second, I understanmd they didn't increase the number of units, but why DEcrease? And the crappy looks of the units. Look at the medusa, hobbit and elementals! The switching between professions is a good idea (though back in HoMM2 I experienced this bug when a warlock of mine turned into a necromancer when he learned necromancy . but the graphics on the adventure map stayed the same lol), but creatures walking without heroes?

It would be too difficult to learn the new rules if there were the same number of creatures as in H3. I think it was just some sort of an experiment. They tried to concentrate on new gameplay, not on creatures. If this experiment will succeed, then they'll probably add some more creatures in Heroes V. If not... well, then they'll slowly get back to old model. But as far as I can see now, this experiment did not fail...

I like the Trolls' smiling face. The best trolls in the whole series, only strange for their color...
And archers are too old for their profession! You can't find so many old men that can see perfectly without eyeglasses.
