Why I hate swamps!
I know swamps are supposed to slow you down, and that is one of the reasons they are included, but I certainly much prefer to play maps that have no swamps. I can live with crawling through them for days, swatting at bugs, wading through mire, backtracking to find a safe route, and all that stuff. What bothers me is getting stung every time I get my spell book out, dropping it in the mud, trying to clean it off, finding that the pages have stuck together, and overall making spellcasting so much trouble it is hardly worth the effort. I know the air is heavy with humidity, but why oh why do the arrows and sling stones travel SOOOOOO slowly through this place. It seems like everthing is too hot, tired, and sweaty to move at more than a snails pace. Please do not give me any more missions that require me to go into the swamps to fight battles and take towns, the frustration is just too much.
On a more serious side, am I the only one whose computer comes almost to a standstill when fighting in swamps? I have no problems doing anything else, but simply opening my spellbook in a swamp battle takes about 45 seconds, then another 30 seconds to close when I choose my spell. Missile discharge can take 5 seconds to cross the screen. I have tried restarting my computer, but nothing helps, and once I am out of the swamps everything works smoothly and quickly again.
I am thinking that it could have to do with my computer barely meeting the min req for running the game and those with better systems would not notice this, but I have ZERO problems unless fighting in a swamp. My system is AMD K5 at 380mhz with 316 meg ram and 4 meg onboard video.

My system is a bit less than yours (P II, 266mHz, 128 meg ram -- but 16 meg video card. I also get that very sloooow screen at times, but had not noticed it was just swamps. It seems to happen more often on larger maps, and when there are a lot of creatures in the fight map. Opening spellbook hasn't ever been that bad, but 5+ seconds for an arrow to cross the screen is not unusual.
At other times it is zippy do dah!

mine is maybe a bit faster than yours, but i still experience those problems. since my specs are at or above recommended, i would expect it to run fine, but it doesn't. it seems, the better your comp, the better the swamp. i still wonder though how it could only happen in the swamp..
it's the reason i still haven''t finished the chaos campaign.

The performance degradation you describe when battling in swamp terrain is one of the well known HOMM4 bugs (I mean is one of the bugs 3DO has publically admitted). I read it was corrected in one of the patches, but I don't recall if it was TRULY corrected.
And, by the way, in a PIII at 666 Mhz. (diabolic speed!) with more than 256 Mb. de RAM the effect of swamp is still noticeable, although it doesn't reaches the terrific times you reported.

Thank you for the replies.
If it is fixed in a patch, it must be 2.0 A bug sort of makes sense, maybe they do something different to display swamp terrain on the battlefield. I know that fighting a seige in swamp is not half as bad (town covers up half of swamp?) The times I mentioned were actually timed with my watch, but the longest times WERE during a fight I had that was wide open, not many bushes and such.
If the chaos campaign has lots of swamp battles, I will wait till they get this bug fixed before I do it. I have gotten to where I will use quick combat in swamps

No, the bug was never patches. I think NWC/3DO claimed it was, but it was pure bullsnow, as were many other NWC/3DO claims :-(
I doubt it has anything to do with memory, it's about as slow with 192 MB (which I used to have) as with 450 MB (which I have now)

I have a Celeron processor of 466MZ and 128 MB RAM and I haven't noticed anything in the swampy areas taking any kind of time to operate. Then again I've only played 2 scenarios and the swampy areas were at a minimum. But nonetheless I still had a moderately sized swamp area and everything worked slow but fine. And why don't I get a pic for my handle? Are they just assigned or more or less "earned" thru repeated postings?

Yeah, the swamp certainly is slow. I play HOMM4 on a PIII 600MHz with 128MB SDRAM, and it is slow as a snail crawling through a damp and mushy swamp. (But not as bad as 45 secs to open the spellbook. That's insane!!!!)

Strange, Ive never experienced the game slowing down during swamp battles.
I would say I rather like swamps, but they can be troublesome if you aren't prepared for them.
If your starting town is in a swamp land and you are able to move in them it gives you a bit of advantage. Like for example in heroes 2 if you start with the barbarians and you are in swamp or desert it can be good because barbarian heroes start with pathfinding.
EDIT: I just realized that this thread is like 8 years old.

I think the original issue was slow machines + buggy release version of Homm 4 that was thankfully fixed and fine tuned a bit since then.

Being chaos and getting pathfinding will make you love swamps, you will move 3x faster with grandmaster pathfinding than those without!
