The soviets were able to have so much success only because they didn't have to split there resources between the nazi's and the japanese. once the americans took the full attention of the japenes away from the asian continent the russians were able to focus there full attention on the nazis. Not to take anything away from the herculean efforts they put forth to help defeat the nazis, it's just that in the end it was a team effort. an effort that would have failed if any on the team hadn't showed up. For instance, if the english had caved in the battle of brittain the americans would have had a very hard time getting anybody across the atlantic to help out in europe esp. as the nazis would have been using without a doubt british naval power.there also would have been no comfortable base to launch an invasion of europe from.Never mind the amount of manpower and airpower they wated against the british that could have been used against the soviets.

DAMN IT WHY CAN THIS THREAD NOT STAY ON TOPIC?
For gods sake guys you want to discuss history, then fine, tonight I'll start a new tavern thread on it and you can talk away, but this thread is about commemorating the dead of the WTC and other tragic attacks NOT history lessons.
Ok travolta you don't like america in general, but is it mutually exclusive that you must only sorrow for these people and not america's losses? 300 odd (sorry I can't remember the exact number) were firefighters or police or ambulance people, brave people doing their job who almost certainly DO NOT get a huge sum of money. But what does it matter? Wow they are rich so they deserve to die more than the poor? THEY ARE BOTH INNOCENT AREN'T THEY?
Could you Please do the favour of if you want to bash america then create a new thread and do it there. This is for rememberance of innocent dying all over the world, not the justification of the dying or the lack of care people show at it.

I wasn't going to respond to these threads, have seen just too many lately, but this is just a little misinformed so I had to.
For your own knowledge, the US donates more money, help, medicine, food, medical expertise, etc. than most other countries combined. Sometimes it is indirectly donated to International help and relief funds and organizations, so you might not see the American flag on the cartons. So saying that America does not help, and are selfish, and don't care about anyone else is wrong.
The reason this is in the news is it is the first foreign terrorist attack on American soil, which decimated a national landmark and killed thousands of people. It is also a wake-up call to Americans in particular that sticking your head in the sand is not an option.

The United States has been following the edicts of the UN since the Gulf War, and that has been a mistake. Many of us are aware of what Saddam has done to the Kurds and the US has been pushing for action since 1998, but the delegates in the UN have stalled, issued more useless resolutions, and do nothing. The recent speech by Bush may have been a little strong, but if the UN doesn't back up their own resolutions (because they see Saddam and his regime as a threat) what else should be done.
And the ridiculous thing, even after Iraq has failed to honor every agreement signed, the international community still would rather stall and talk.

The problem is that since the US has helped out so much, it has come to be expected, rather than appreciated. Imagine how many cries of "selfish Americans" would start if we gradually reverted to the isolationist policies of the pre-WW2 period....
Don't worry Travolta, we know your problems, we are trying to help, but it has been most of the rest of the international community that has stalled action, not the US.
On the plus side, I'm going to try HOMM4 on multiplayer, since it's finally out. I almost forgot about the game, I have been occupying myself with Neverwinter Nights, a great game. (sheepish attempt to refer to the game on its own board).

Okay
1. Thank you to everyone who has expressed sympathy. I still think that the two things that moved me the most a year ago were the Star Spangled Banner being played at the Louvre and Tony Blair's eloquence and support immediately after the attacks.
2. Americans are selfish, but that just means they're human since humans are selfish. It's our nature to spend more time thinking of ourselves than empathizing. That's not a criticism, when you really think about it, there's no good reason that humans should care about the suffering of others at all. Which is what makes humans so great - the fact that they care about eachother at all, even if they don't as much as they should. So see my first point again and thank you.
3. Aculius, perhaps you should actually read my post before you call me an Idiot.
4. Thanks for sharing Travolta, I would just like to juxtapose a few of your statements and leave it at that...
"The americans is so selfish" vs. "IF one of my relatives was on the plane, i would only sorrow for him/her, not else." "Why didnt they bomb saddam and helped us?" "couldnt America Helped us?"
"trust me, we kurdish are so good hearted, if america was attacked or something like that, we would have been there and helped the americans" vs. "and i wouldn´t cry or something like that, i hate Americans" and "in my opinion, i dotn sorrow unfortunality!!!!!. a give a snow!!!" and "IT WAS ONLY A BUILDING THAT A FEW THOUSANDS WERE KILLED" (Seeing as how the US was attacked)
5. The posts also bring up an interesting Catch-22 - if the US goes to war in the Middle East to topple Saddam, they're reckless and arrogant and have no right to act as the world police. If the US doesn't, well, then "why didnt they bomb saddam and helped us?"

sorry bout that
My post was only meant to show that as in WWII no single nation can stand alone against evil and terror. No single nation can lay claim that they and they alone have been wronged. There is no wrong in expressing grief and sympathy for the victims of sept. 11.
p.s. Unfortunately not many terrorist attacks will be fully televised as they happen on world wide television. Most will only be known about after the event has happenned. The world see's the aftermath but no one see's the event. People can wonder how this single event could garner so much international attention? Everybody in the world sat and watched the Twin Towers fall, live!

Too true, you don't often see both the beginning and end of a terrorist attack on video.
And don't forget the 15 million poeple who watched it outside their windows.
