PLEASE HELP...HEROES 1!!!!!!!
I Like very much Heroes of Might & Magic 1 (dos). (yes I also have Heroes II,III, & VI, but I
love it mostly). Well, when I changed from a Pendium Celeron 300 to a AMD 1200, with 256mb DDR memory.( The motherboard is a Legend QDI model KTV8366 KuDoz7 with Bios Award 6.0 pg.), the game cannot be played correctly form windows (millenium) any more. (It runs only for a few rounds and only from windows explorer, not from ms dos prompt, and bocks the computer)
It cannot be played in win XP either (but it works for more rounds than win millenium). It also blocks the computer
It can be loaded if I boot from a startup disk that I have made, but it runs only 1 - 20 rounds and blocks the computer.
I erased cd, language and sound drivers from config.sys of boot disk and the game worked for 7 rounds and then blocked the computer.
I tried the game in a 1700xp AMD with the standard memory (not DDR) and it played ok directly from the Windows!!!
So I think that DDR caused the problem.
(I found that Heroes requires 4434K extended or expanded (xms or ems) mwmory and 374k conventional memory.)
Is it available in Windows???
I tried the following config.sys i bootable disk (win 98)
device=a:himem.sys
device=a:emm386.exe noems
dos=high,umb
------------------------------------
I also tried:
device=a:emm386.exe auto
device=a:emm386.exe 8192
device=a:emm386.exe RAM
--------------------------------------
my autoexec.bat is :
lh a:mouse.com
-------------------------------------
Anyway, what can I do to play it????????

Mmm, I'll try to find one of my old bootdisks when I get home and then I'll post an autoexec.bat and config.sys that should get your bootdisk running for heroes 1 under millenium. On Xp I don't know, a Win98 bootdisk might not work if your harddrive is formatted in NTFS instead of FAT32. See ya.
On a sidenote: shouldn't this thread belong in the Library in stead of the Tavern?

If you're into games, throw ME out the window. If you're into older games, the same with XP. 98SE rules!

I've had really good luck running DOS games in Windows XP (especially with VDMSound for emulating midi and soundblaster and such - http://ntvdm.cjb.ne/).
I agree that Win98SE is pretty good for DOS games, but I wouldn't discount XP. Everything I've tried on it, except for a couple games, has worked.
Oh yeah, and in response to kostas, yes, HOMM1 is available for Windows (and does work better in Windows).

If none of the above suggestions would work. This may be helpful. The country settings and so, plus the soundblaster drivers may be different, but it can give you an idea. Took me some time to find the disk, but here it is:
