Poll Question:
Will Heroes ever be the same: How would you want it to change?

With the recent release of HOMM4, I have seen many of my friends go buy the game... I will myself receive the game by Christmas but the issue at matter is not this...

Overall opinions (despite some radical support or rejection) for HOMM4 did not result as good as the game seemed to led people to believe before it's release...

Although I think that the Heroes series has been a long and prosperous series, I did not think HOMM4 quite succeeded as it was meant to by 3DO... although this was one of the lesser blows... 3DO has taken consideration that HOMM is one of it's most successful games (however with an upsetting release of Heroes for Playstation) and is willing to make HOMM5 unlike it's predecessors... a game that no one will restrain themselves from buying...

Because of this rumors said that many of the 3DO's board is planning to cope with the decline of Heroes enthuisiasm by combining the to-the-most failed Might and Magic series WITH Heroes to form some sort of RPG/STRATEGY genre game... where you switch gameplay from the original adventure map to a bird's eye view RPG type scenario (much like Diablo II) where you use your heroes to fight single handedly (decision of whether choice monsters would accompany you is varying)...

Although I doubt that this is true... it is nevertheless interesting to see how people would react to this... many people have however adamantly told me that this rumor is true... I dunno... whatever the future holds we shall see... but let's see if we can take part in this future...

If you are interested in this change to Heroes... please state your opinion... if you wish to curse me or throw some other profanity for putting this up... well it's up to you... just curse me after you write your opinion I guess...

Remember that this is an opinion's page, not a fact page... I also understand that is the Heroes Community and many of you are probably the biggest fans of Heroes... but also remember that this page is to present new ideas and if you would just think for a second how Heroes might be better or worse with this change I'd recommend you say it...

I will try to make updates on this rumor/fact on Heroes 5 as soon as I gain more information from looking around...

I chose the second option in the vote, but what I really think is the following.

I am strongly FOR a major change back from HOMM 4 to HOMM 3 with:

HERO/COMBAT related features
- enhanced hero development (master and grandmaster levels of skills)
- remove heroes from combat!
- include hero specialties
- make it so that creatures cannot wander w/out a hero
- back to HOMM2 for a magic system (HOMM4 is ok except for the fact that for ex. all lvl2 spells have the same mana cost!)
- bring back combat memos (the centaurs do 134 damage. 1 bone dragon perishes)
- remove simultaneous retaliation!!! that is one of the major things that keeps me from playing HOMM4

CREATURE/CASTLE related features
- at least 8 castles with unique creatures
- all creatures upgradeable, but in a way that the upgrade is a 50/50 alternative for the unupgraded creature. Once upgraded, one can only recruit the upgraded creature from that castle (a bit like in Disciples 2, except that it is limited to one castle) - the magog was something in that spirit in HOMM3
- recruit more mythological creatures to the game, don't create "evil sorceresses"; there is really a lot to choose from

MAP related features
- vastly more 3DO made maps to hack through and multiplay
- multiplayer campaigns
- a random map generator

GRAPHICS/MISC features
- make heroes 5 a 2D game for clear view of battlefield, lower system requirements. instead of developing in 3D, please take the time to do creature/interface art. HOMM4 is a real step backwards from previous versions in this area
- if you really feel like including 3D with an idea to cater to the console market, please implement a version of Disciples 2 battle (with moving creatures of course), but please make it so that people can calculate the movement like in HOMM3
- fix major bugs before release (means test before release as well!)
- extra creatures, options, artifacts

As regards the original "rumour" of HOMM becoming a mix, I strongly hope that it does not come to that, because that means an end to the series... Look at Final Fantasy, it had it's fanbase, it had 10 sequels, it was/is successful. Just do more of a good thing, don't make experiments that do not pay off! HOMM4 was interesting to try and see, but it was too poorly made. Now 3DO might have the chance to right things and secure the future for the series. If they start another new development without righting the things, they will loose all the fan base of HOMM that they had for their inconsistency.

I hope 3DO use common sense Good luck to them, because I would really like to see HOMM5 a success!

Seeing the light

That was one long yet interesting response... you have quite a knack for argument...

Personally... I did not know how to react to HOMM4 only having 60 creatures compared to HOMM3's 120+... 3DO reduced the creatures by half not to mention obliteration of almost all the original towns...

Right now the stories of Heroes is based on Might and Magic (as you may have noticed Might and Magic came out first and it's story links closely with Heroes)... so mixing the games together wouldn't be much of a problem with Heroes... but it's whether the ppl would like this original turn-based strategy game to change into something else...

Main thing is if you would even buy HOMM5 if it was more of an RPG/Adventure/Strategy game... three in one... that's quite a lot...

But if it is the new changing genre midgame features would be interesting...

first of all:

1) Whenever you enter your heroes in a town... it's not just a scenary you click on anymore... but an adventure map starts up and you controlling your heroes first hand and travel around the town and into the outskirts completing quests in the time the town gives you in order to gain control of it... towns would have weapon and gear markets and herb/healing stores... training grounds... with other features... like old ones such as mage guilds and such... but instead of clicking on the mage guild you actually enter it and climb up the stairs... town centers are still there for construction, but instead of simply paying for construction you're hiring construction workers ALONG with the resources required to build...

2) In some ways this makes the game a lot more confusing... on the adventure map you have an gold and resources stockpile and that you earn from all the towns in general goes into construction as usual... but all your heroes also receives gold from either selling the artifacts they find (artifacts are used in melee combat in the RPG mode in the form of equipment...) or finding gold that wandering monsters drop (yes wandering monsters drop gold now)... heroes use their own earning to buy things from the bazaar and use it to their own advantage... the gold that heroes earn is separate from the adventure stockpile...

This is all I got so far... I will update on battling scenarios and how 3DO is gonna intigrate it... if you have any suggestions or opinions on this submit them

Oh yeah, sorry for the long post which was a bit out of topic. Just wanted to vent some of the things, and too much came out...

I would not buy a game that was supposed to replace HOMM series while combining HOMM, MM and Diablo2 out of pure hatred for that game I do not think they shoudl merge the games. And the plans show that they won't, considering HOMM5 schedule for Q3 2003. A bit too little time for a ground breaking overhaul.

ya well... don't sweat it.... it was interesting to read the features u've written... if it all goes well it might become a reality...

as for the "merging of the games" I doubt that it would happen either but 3DO is pretty desperate right now to draw out gamers...

Yes, I think the launch quality of HOMM4 showed just how desperate they are

It is a pity, because I've grown to enjoy MM7 and MM8 as well as the HOMM2 and HOMM3 games. The successors just didn't hold my attention for long, despite the huge expectations...
