Get either Heroes 2 or 3 and play them a lot. Then decide. If you like the game's idea, if you want more, and if you think you won't mind no AI and lots of bugs, go get Heroes 4. DO NOT buy H4 right away, you would CERTAINLY get a bad first impression.

Look at bunches of reviews, screenshots, etc. They'll give you a general idea of what you're getting into. You don't want to buy the game, then realize "Hey! What's my hero doing on the battlefield???" If you know what you're getting -- and what you're not getting -- you're less likely to be disappointed if you opt to go for it. If you don't like what you see of the game online, you probably won't like the game in person, either.
It took me about a month to decide to get H4. It's not a world-shattering game, but I'm not at all sorry I got it, even though it doesn't run well on my system. (That's one thing some of the reviews leave out, by the way.) Its playing style is familiar enough to be comforting but different enough from H3 that I still play and enjoy both games. As pepak said, don't decide right away. Take your time.
Do be aware that all the criticism of "no multiplayer" is now out of date, as 3DO has released a free patch for that. The new criticism is "slow multiplayer."
Edit: spelling error corrected.

Buy it. Patch the game, which takes care of the bugs. Don't play on difficulties above Advanced and the AI plays tolerably. 'nuff said.

I say, don't play anything below advanced (I usually play only champion games unless obviously impossible) because the AI sucks so hard that you won't get a challenging gameplay otherwise.

i haven't even finished a scenario (which may be why I have so many losses lol)
But if you like to have a lot of fun learning alongside other people playing ToH or fun on gamespy is a blast, I have had more enjoyment doing this than any game i have played including diablo and diablo 2 nad expansions there lol.

So far (H4, first three campaigns of GS), all campaigns were possible on champion difficulty.

In my opinion, the impression would be even worse after first playing the great games HOMMII & III, then playing HOMMIV. That's like shooting yourself in the foot.
Buy HOMMII & III cheaply, get the expansions and leave it at that (at least until a new HOMM eventually is released).
Buy well

to be honest i don't like the AI so much...under champion level, computer seem to have the same Ai, it's just the strength of neutral armies that got increased. Say, I got killed by the first group of enemy in front of my door several times, so i avoid them and go straight to enemy's town. And the enemy are having the same problem...their heroes got killed by those creeps, and their town is almost empty because of it so I just take it. I don't know if it's just some maps or all are like this, but that's not too impressive.

I am actually looking forward to HOMM4, but then again I own a mac and my copy doesn't ship until tomorrow. Let's just say my HOMM3 CD is a bit worn out. Hopefully 4 is not to hard to get used to.

Heroes Origins
Actually, if you want to get technical about it, if you want to go all the way back to the roots, you'll need a little gem known as "Kings Bounty".
That's pretty much where it all began.
However, Heroes I was an interesting game in it's time, and still stands up rather well.
Essentially you start with either a knight, a barbarian, a sorceress or a wizard.
If you can get it cheaply enough, then fine, but I wouldn't make it a life's quest to go after.

6 reasons...
1. u donate almost 50$ to a poor company
2. since i put the h4 dvd case under the shelve it stopped to waggle
3. if u wanna bake some cookies the CD is very cool for forking with the dough
4. if u run out of coal u can use the manual to heat things up a bit
5. u can practice with it very easy for the "PC world crash championship"
6 once u played it u really see what a masterpiece homm3 is

1. Heroes IV offers new and intriguing gameplay features because of the new hero and skill system.
2. A very well balanced game that is probably harder to master than heroes 3. The learning curve is longer because the game has more depth on the strategical field.
3. Heroes IV is a different game and hard to compare with heroes III. I like to play both as they require different skills to play. I'm not saying gameplay is better or worse in the fourth, it's only different, and refreshing.
4. Buying the game will provide the company with more resources to build a both graphically and strategically great Heroes V.
5. New challenges await in terms of online heroes IV. Completely different ways of playing will be needed to be as succesful in this version as in the third.
6. There are no heroes IV veterans yet, your time is now and so much still needs to be discovered still about online playing. Who knows, you could be a veteran top ranked player by next season.
7. Many new players start out with playing heroes VI without even having played heroes III ever. This means that for the next few months a fresh flow of new members will keep finding their way to the zone to join the game online.
8. Play a demo, play a friend's copy of the game for 2-3 weeks. If you like it, why shouldn't you buy it?
9. It's in my opinion one of the best recent turn based strategy games. A lot of people like age of wonders better, but I think that game offers a lot less depth in strategy terms.
10. The replayability of the heroes series is legendary to say the least. With the disappearance of the random map creator it's a bit harder to find new maps. There are however a large number of maps available online, some of which are really good. Just look around a bit.
