I think CraigHack's idea is excellent. Here's why:
1) You won't get the person-person bickering and/ or "feuds" between certain members and mods
2) We won't see what the moderators do as something motivated by their personal feelings.
3) The mods will regain some "posting liberty" as regular members. The main problem here is for instance not mixing the mod and the member role, i.e. defending what you did as a mod with your regular member alias and such.
Oh, and I don't see the problem with just one username. Why not have one account for each mod, all looking exactly the same to the users? I know you can't have several members with identical names, and although I'm no expert, I refuse to believe that this can not be arranged.
