Quote: As to the changes in the story, I for one think that they improve the storytelling. The elves, with the exception of Legolas, in the book are total fairies. Barely helping at all, just concerned about running away across the sea and hiding in an immortal bliss. With the biggest problem being, they know what Sauron will do to the earth and they still don't lift a finger to help. It was a great idea to have the elvin archers join the men at Helm's Deep.
Hi Oldtimer,
I wish I could share your enthusiasm for this particular change in the story. I found it problematic for two reasons. For one thing, Haldir (already introduced as a Lothlorien Elf in Fellowship) says in Two Towers that Elrond sent him and his followers to aid in the defense of Helm's Deep. How can that be? He's supposed to be working for Galadriel? Second, in fairness to the Elves, I must note that the three great Elven leaders (Elrond in Rivendell, Galadriel in Lothlorien, and Tharanduil in Mirkwood) have their own problems to deal with, and that's why they couldn't afford to aid the Rohirim in Helm's Deep. Rivendell is threatened by the Goblin King in the Misty Mountains (the same one that captured Bilbo and the Dwarves in The Hobbit). Lothlorien is threatened by the Moria Orcs as well as Sauron's tower of Dol Guldur in Southern Mirkwood. The Wood Elves, led by Tharanduil, are under attack by Goblins and Worgs from the Withered Heath in the Grey Mountains as well as Orcs from Dol Guldur in Southern Mirkwood. The sense I got from the books is not that the Elves didn't want to help, but that they were already doing all that they could do. Tharanduil, after all, gave a son, Legolas, to the Fellowship. Elrond called the council to bring together the Free Peoples, and Galadriel aided the Fellowship with safe passage and gifts. Yes, the Elves are leaving, but from my reading of the books, it's hard to fault them for this. It's as if they're torn between their love of Middle Earth and an irresistable call to sail West. It's as if they can't help their overwhelming desire to leave Middle Earth and make room for the new age of Man. I fault Peter Jackson for not making these things more clear in the movie, and I cannot excuse his gratuitous use of the Elves in the Battle of Helm's Deep. I understand that he wants to play up racial harmony and cooperation, but I wish he hadn't done so at the expense of Tolkien.

But Orcs don't go into Lothlorien, and all the elves talk about is their retirement villas across the sea. Having Galadriel send the archers makes the elves heroic instead of the sniveling stay at homes that they became in the LoTR. If anything, they should have gathered together for a diversionary attack on Mordor to keep Sauron guessing who had the ring. As it happened the luck of having Merry and Pippin tag along was enough to take Sauron's eyes from the real threat, but that was unplanned for by the parties involved.

I cannot and do not deny that the change in the character was particularly disappointing. Haldir is not to be seen after FotR, and the elves are diminishing, they cannot have the power to rescue Rohan.
Anyway, how come Saruman is so stupid to arm Orcs with crossbows? France lost to Britain because of heavy imported crossbows according to my history book.
