Creature Banks

Ok.. Maybe this is not new to some and thats why basically I am asking.

I am curious if we have figured out the minimum -- maximum range that creature banks can be. And furthermore, wether they grow?

I had noticed in game the other night, that a crypt, or graveyard or some such bank. ie the one with vamps, skels and ghosts..  I could have sworn there were no vamps when a scout had checked it, then when I attacked it later that game, voila vamps.

And furthermore is there a way to check those sizes without killing a scout? I know I know.. its only a lv1 crit.. but.. for example the one that really seems to get me is a minotaur bank..  I always see dozens of minotaurs.. the biggest mino bank I've encountered is 12 per stack.. which normally seems to be my luck when.. well shorthanded now thats 48 still dozens.. I think the smallest I've seen is 4 stacks of 8 making it 32..

Back in H3 there where plenty of ways to check bank sizes without losing troops to it. I am just kinda curious if in h4 there is a way to also check this. (I mean exact size of course) not " yeah theres dozens in there "

Main reason behind this, I don't like losing a fast scout in a remote area when I want to atack a griffon nest 6 days later.. he wants to keep scouting.

So anyway the question...

What is the minimum--maximum creature amounts in the various banks?

and

Is there a way to check the exact numbers without killing off a scout?

Creature bank repopulates itself a month or so after it has been searched. It is then when they have the minimum amount of creatures there. Creature banks grow, that is for sure, I'm not sure about the quantities or limits (if there is any limit). Also, difficulty probably also affects the number of creatures in the bank.

If you want to check the creature bank without losing any creatures, then just attack with your hero and retreat (not very sensible option). I'd rather sacrifice a creature.

I guess I won't find the answer I am looking for.. I was thinking more of a trick like checking utopia or conservatory sizes intellegently in homm3..

But I think maybe with the lack of upgrades some banks will be impossible to check in this way.

Well just like "lots" in h1,h2,h3 --- "dozens" in h4 is the trickiest range because it is 20-49...

Scouting skill, visiting but not entering might also work... I know that the first works, I am not sure on the second.

Also, another funny thing with the creature banks... Say for instance you killed the Orc bank and it had 75 orcs.  Then later, when it starts replenishing again, you attack it.  It has only 15 orcs.
You get the same amount of money for killing the 15 orcs as the 75 orcs

That's why your scouts should travel in 2-5 creature stacks. Never lonely.

if you have say 5 sprites traveling and you need to sacrafice 1 to check a bank you still can continue scouting with the other 4.  Then next bank you wanna check sacrifice a sprite and continue scouting with the 3 remaining etc.

Growth

Ya Jinxer is right on the money, specially when you put a scout in the boat. Get the boat beside an island, split off a sprite or imp on to the island, and the boat moves on to the next island. Or you go next to an empty boat and split off a scout into the new boat. Giving you two boats.

But what I wanted to mention was, I recently playtesting a map. I sent a scout into a dragon cave, late week2. Then week 3 day 2 or 3, I did hit the dragon cave with my main. Only to find that with the start of the new week the dragon cave's number grew from 4 to 5.
I didnt enjoy that surpise.

Anyone else seen this happen too??

Guessing Numbers:
I believe a Dragon Cave is always between 4 - 8 when it starts off, but they may grow above 8.
Most I have seen in a Mausoleum is 4 vamps, 20 ghosts, and a 100 and some skeles.
Etc....
Not tho it matters because the life of a sprite is always worth the look.

The banks grow like you dwelling in you castle so for example it means a dragon cave will have 1 more dragon each week. For mausoleum it's harder to calculate it because you had vampire only when the number of skeleton and ghosts reach a min and i don't know that min. In fact the rules is simple: when it's a bank with one type of creature (cave dragon, griffin nest, ...) it grows like dwelling when it's a multi bank creature (mausoleum, ...) the highest creatures appears only when the growing of the first one as reach a minimum number.

Advanced scouting will allow you to see exact numbers, the second suggest doesn't work (you see "dozens" "band" etc.)

I also don't think that the reward is exactly the same if you kill the smaller stack after it has replenished. Firstly the treasure seems to grow (ever got 60 gems from a glade in the late game?) and secondly while you may get a similar amount of gold the other resource/artifacts are much less than they were at first. Still it's well worth sending a weak force round to clean up one month after they've been cleared for the first time.
