Yes, D&D is technically "living a lie" for a few hours. But so are all video games, or television shows for that matter. We live in a society that capitalizes off the fact that real life is dull.

two cents plus some lint...
Only the most unbalanced individuals fail to differentiate between the fictional worlds of RPGs and reality. Obsession is never good, but I don't think you can blame the object of obsession for the obsessor's personal problems (if that's what you're referring to in this and the other D&D thread, Celfious). If something blows up, chances are it was the person who was the bomb, not the game which was da bomb.
For everyone else, games like Dungeons and Dragons are no more harmful than games like Monopoly. They require brain power, and they require interaction with other human beings. In my opinion, that puts them miles ahead of plopping down and watching TV, which can take less thought than staring at a blank wall. The video RPGs reduce or eliminate the personal contact aspect, but they still require brain power, problem solving, and strategy.
Of course, they also cultivate the imagination, and I never underestimate the value of that.

Yea', I like the games dont get me wrong. D&D is alright. Takes alot of time. I prefer somethings over the classic dice/table game.

To me D&D is a big waste of time. It's useless to just dream that you can do the stuff that your person does in the games.

It all depends on the DM. If anyone has been with an unimaginative/inexperienced DM/GM, and a good one, they probably know what I'm talkin about.

I miss D&D so much... Been 3 years since I last played. Can't find a myself a party! I remember my glorious DM days when I spent all that time writing new adventures and drawing maps (I think that my world became more detailed than our own ). With all that gone now I feel like a part of me is missing.

Reflections on 3rd edition?
Class: Cleric, I like the idea of being able to fight and everyone else around you needing you alive
Setting: Gotta be dragonlance after reading the books, but it's rare anyone will do this setting so it usually comes down to the realms, and within the realms I love waterdeep or the dales
3rd Ed: Good and bad. Personally I like what they did to stuff like the combat and characters, but IMO it's still not enough to make it as good as it could be. Personally I like stuff like hit locations and the MERP damage system over any of AD&D , but 3rd ed is a good starter role-playing game.

Well, here it is for me:
Class: Thief, but only if played right (with lots of personality and style).
Setting: I played in my own setting, which I called (and how uncreative I was for a DM!) the Red Sky. As a DM I don't think there is a better feeling than playing in your very own world where you are the true master.
3rd Ed: Good and bad. I don't quite care, I'm in it for the roleplaying and not the rules. All I need is some set of rules so that there it's all somewhat balanced and everything is possible. I don't mind if it's D&D or AD&D, 3rd edition... everything goes!

Well personaly, I play every week a couple of hours. (although I would love to play more ;-) In our party, we swap the DM seat with every finished campaign. So every half year one could say. In this way everyone can experience what it is to DM a party and everyone can pick up nice ideas from someone else. Personally, I like D&D most, but there are a lot of good RPG's out there. Some of them happen in this world and this time so it can be very confusing to separate reality from fiction in the end.
In D&D I try to swap class every campaign so I learn what every class is good at. Starting with a fighter over a thief to a cleric and a wizard. Like this as I gained RPG-experience I played the more challenging roles in the party. I don't want to disrespect any class with saying this. Favorite campaign : to hard to tell. 3rd edition : easier to explain to newbs.
