I "only" check the forums twice a day, sorry if I didn't reply quick enough for you.
Anyway, head on over to my multiplayer FAQ and it tells you how to do IP games under technical questions. If you have further questions just post them here... I promise that I'll reply to you quicker next time.

Hi psychobabble, I tried the ip stuff for over a half hour the other night to no avail. We wound up having to use the gamespy stuff ( If you have any updates to that section it would be greatly appreciated. We were basically only trying to connect cable to phone and nothing more or less. Neither of use could connect even with giving a server name or not. Have you tested ip/tcp much? Thanks for any input.

Are you sure you were using the right IP address? Remember that for many people their external IP (ie the one you need to use) is different from the internal IP address which is what shows up on your local network (and in-game). IP connection should be simple and in fact Gamespy does use direct IP connection (there are NO central servers involved with it, thus it is no slower than direct IP) when you use it to play games so if it works through gamespy it will work through IP if you are using the right IP.
Basically if you're playing over the net I'd recommend using gamespy unless you have a pressing reason not to, because working out what the correct IP for direct IP and who can host etc. can be annoying, and you have no way of talking to each other if it's not working.
I have used IP connection a few times, sometimes to connect to ppls games who didn't want to use gamespy, and once to test that port mapper thing I've go in the FAQ, and it worked for me.

Yes, used ip trace and also the ingame number to start. I know my ip and it was the same in the game but tried other on my opponent in return. Not sure what the problem was but was wondering if it was incountered before. Gamespy did work ok, but with the natural incumberances.
