H4 castles: raise or raze?
When I play heroes 4, and I finally have a good force that has been focused on winning a seige (archers, swift foot soldiers, and flyers) I look for an enemy town to trash. When I do find one, the enemy quickly retreats inside. Now I've got'em! I attack...my butt is stomped! He builds a castle to perch his archers or spell casters on, and totally crushes my running and scrambling forces into dust. Now, I didn't build a castle (I always thought it was pretty expensive) so I could have more money to go towards my savage murder venture, but still I'm bested most of the time against even weaker armies! Are the benefits of a castle for the defender greater than the money saved by the attacker for not building up to castle? Shed some light on this!

That is hard to say since while he is making his way towards you another army could be gathering things. Or he could be saving up money for his Level 4 dwelling and doesn't want you too come and distract him and make him spend some of his money on creatures too guard it. So he sacrifices some troops, but in exchange he will be getting a good look at your side of the map, distracting you while he goes after something else or just committing suicide.
Benifits for the defender are that you get some experience getting rid of these creatures, possibly getting one of his main heroes and maybe netting some good artifacts, as well as saving money for your own offensive army.
One of the things I really hate is that the Citadel and Castle are prerequisites for some of the dwellings and not others. Perhaps they should make the castle necesary for all 4th level creatures, that way you can't just build them up in the first week and go on a rampage. Not that I haven't used this tactic in the past. Have you realized that the Vampires and the Bone Dragons have the same Attack and melee Defense? The Bone Dragon has 60 ranged def instead of 30 because he is skeletal.
