Quote: Yeah, the genie doesn't make much sense however. The Djinn are often evil, pranksters, or such (though some are good). Maybe they watched too many "I dream of Genie" episodes
remember the movie "The Thief of Bagdad" from the 1940ies? Abu found a bottle on the beach, opened it, and a genie came out of it and gave him 3 free wishes for freeing him?
I guess this is the idea of the genie in H3.

Griffin (forgot the origen).
Cerberus (three-headed dog, guarding the gates of Hades).
Sorry,totally forgot bout those.
The cerberus-guards the gate to the underworld, lets dead souls in,but lets nobody out of the underworld(except Hermes)
Dunno bout griffons.
Not Hermes, Haides. The griffin was in a Greek story of a philosopher that escaped prison on a griffin.

Hmmm... As I know things (not much):
Griffins or griffons have greek origin. Half eagle-half lion, they were some kind of pets and guardians. In the middle-age they become a good creature, a protector of the faithfulls or something like that.
Monks are warrior clerics or priests of various religions (shinto, for example). As protectors in style monks figth only with bare hands or staves, weapons that cannot kill someone.
Angels are kind of daemons, spirits of another plane. In christianity they become the good aligned, protector spirits, servants of the so called "God".
Centaurs are from greek mitology. Somewhere they described as experiments of the people of the lost city of Atlantis but later they become creations of the forests' goddess (Artemis, if I remembere it well) and protectors of the nature (along with fauns or satyrs).
Dwarves are scandinavian, mentioned to evolve from maggots inside an old giant. They live under the surface, like maggots do.
Elves are once some kind of humans. They earn beauty and long life from the gods because their deeds. They are protectors of the Life (even dark elves, cause they originally just have darker skin).
Pegasus or pegasi are child of Medusa, one of the 3 gorgon sisters.
Dendroids are kind of forest daemons, guardian spirits of the woods, like the ents or treeants on other miths.
Unicorn is the result of the meeting with a rinoceros. The ancient greeks thought that rinoceroses are one-horned horses, uni-corns...
Dragons are widespread in every myth on our planet. Great reptilian creatures with immense power and wisdom. May originate the remnants of pterosaur skeletons found by the ancient men.
Gremlins are irish. Little creatures whom tend to "sabotage" things just for fun. Gizmo and it's siblings are maug'vies, dwarves or gnomes in the chinese legends.
Gargoyles are protecting daemons bound for a place for eternity. They created in the middle-age and formed and named after a dragon what lived in the river Temse in Paris.
Golems are jewish creatures. They made from clay or stone to be tools of justice (there is the world "truth" on their forehead). Later they become revenging spirits and creatures of spellcasters in the middle-age.
Magis are spellcasters, alchiemists, some kind of wizards.
Genies or geenies are desert spirits in the arabian myth originating the time of wonders, a long lost time when supernatural creatures and spirits live on the world before the time of men.
Nagas are demigods of the vedan myth, children of the sea-gods. They are snake daemons, guardians of certain places and archenemies their siblings, the birdmen. Nagas are immortal because they choose immortality instead of the joys of life (like love, for example).
Titans are half-gods. In greek mythology they rule before the gods. After a lost war they cast in Tartaros, where they must keep the base of the world or something like that. Atlas, a titan, keep the world on his shoulders while another titan, Prometheus (who gave for men light and healing) punished for the eternity by a giant eagle eat his liver every day (he later rescued by Heracles or Hercules).
Imps are little devils of the lower planes. They aren't dangerous but very wise although not very helpful. Familiars are pets of spellcasters, in myths usually smaller daemons or other supernatural creatures.
Gog and Magog are historical persons, great and merciless conquerors. They designated evil by the conquered peoples.
Hellhounds are fictive creatures of the D&D universe. Cerberus however is a 3-headed dog from the greek myth. Cerbie guard the entrance of the Netherworld and defeated by Hercules in one story while in an other story Perseus defeat him before he met Medusa in her chapel.
Daemons are the evilised spirits of christianity. Originally they are neutral spirits in ancient myths. Pit fiends are a kind from them labelled evil by christian religion.

Hades ruled the underworld, Hermes was the messanger god...so technically BOTH. After all Hermes would have to be able to deliver the messages. But the three-headed wolf really was not to keep anybody out, but to keep them IN for the most part (though it did both). There were others that could get in also. Zeus for one..but normally they didn't want to because it was not a nice place to visit.
