HoMM4 Hints and strategies

I was trying to find some thread about strategies which are commonly used by most people as well as those which are more advanced and not as easy to use but all I could find were heroes 3 threads therefore I would appreciate any responses on this matter, here is few basic things which you should know before playing multiplayer vs human opponent, feel free to correct me, if you think that some are wrong and please add another tips/strategies

basics:
=======

1. Scouting is very important, especially at early part of the game, send out lots of single level 1's into all directions, also use lvl 1 creatures for picking up resources, best lvl 1 unit in this case would be bandits which have the ability to sneak past lvl 1 guards

2. The marketplace is your friend.Rates in heroes 4 are much better then they used to be in heroes 3 therefore you should use marketplace to make sure you get lvl 4 creatures asap

3. try to have more then 1 good hero, I would say 2 is minimum but some ppl have 3,4 heroes, this is open to discussion but imho play with 1 hero only is suicide

4. send with your main hero(es) only the fastest units so the slow units wont hold him back

5. try to capture another town(s) asap, then go for mines and then hunt for experiences/artifacts

6. make sure you know your town and advantage and disadvantages, also you should know your opponent town and on the start choose your town according to your opponent town, e.g dont play vs necro with might

well thats all I can think of now, looking forward to see your responses

Always remember to drink potions before big battle. Especially Speed and Immortality Potions are important to have so don't waste 'em. If you have opportunity to attack your opponent, attack him with scout first to wear off the advantages of potions like Speed and Toughness and the effect of all possible moral/stat boosters the enemy army has visited.

If enemy force is attacking your town and you have no hope to prevail. Try to attack and kill the heroes from enemy army if possible. And if you succeed, leave your town unprotected. This way the enemy can't capture the town and you have bought yourself more time.

few other things which I have learned lately

1st always carry into fight plenty of immortality poitions
2nd if you can use dispell or cancel spell on enemy hero, which will take away his immort poition, then kill him
3rd if you want to get with your hero fast to town, block all entrances of the towns which you do NOT want to get in and then attack some creatures and leave, hero will appear at town which have free entrance
4th if you are defending town make sure to put all shooting units on wall so they get bonus when attacking enemy
5th when attacking enemy hero make sure you place your units according to your enemy units, e.g protect your hero so he wont be in line of sight of his shooters etc, this depends on situation but if you screw up at this point it can cost you battle/game, especially if you have about equal forces

val what about add some tips, I am sure u have plenty

that is why most people have the rule "no gm necro" ...

and one potion that I have been using lately that I think is underrated is POTION OF MANA.  1 Potion of mana costs 500 gold and gives your hero 25 more spell points, whether or not he already was at maximum.  You can drink these out of battle, and they can be stacked.  So technically, your hero can have 1000 spell points with this method

This is very effective if you have an army where your spellcaster is central.  Even if you have very high spell points max, in the big battle it is still easy to run out of spell points.  It is also handy to have them with your hero if, for instance, you've just broken through to the enemy's side (on closed maps) and you used most of your spell points doing it, and then you see the enemy army right there...  YOu might be screwed if your spellcaster is out of mana.  Also, if the battle boils down to basically a spellcaster vs. spellcaster duel (most other creatures are dead) because each spellcaster keeps casting potions of imm on himself, then you will have the edge because your spell points will last longer.

Anyway, some may disagree, but I find potions of mana quite good

Ive never figured this one out...

"3rd if you want to get with your hero fast to town, block all entrances of the towns which you do NOT want to get in and then attack some creatures and leave, hero will appear at town which have free entrance"

Whenever I put things in front of my town, my hero still returns there, just on the corner or whatever.  How many squares do you need to block so he cannot get retreated there?

You must block 4.  2 squares are in front of the gates, and then there is 1 diagonal from each end of the gate.

3,4 / hero

bonuses disappear after hero dies (don't be fooled by looking at your troops when you have tactics arties on a dead hero, that bonus is bogus)

Each town has quirks that you can use to take a bite out of the enemy. Death has what has been called the "Imp Bomb." You may know what this is already, but for those who don't it's where you take a single stack of imps, split them to fill each slot as their own little army, send them against an enemy army or garrison, and dance them around as much as you can to keep them alive! They eat up the enemy mana (the bummer is the imps have to be able to see the casters). Then you can come in with your main army and decimate the enemy, who can't lift a single magical finger against you. Might has the cyclopes. On open ground they are terrifying, but in a siege against a garrison, this advantage is diminished, so try to draw enemies out of the town by snatching their mines and taking their stuff, or detach a small army from your legion and put them real up against the gate, and put your main army right next to it. I've had the computer jump out with a detached division big enough to pick-off the small army, but after they beat it, my main army jumped on them and kicked their collective hide. Nature has faierie dragons and the summon skill. Fairy dragons can be lethal on their own if you don't have enough stacks to gang up on them. One fairie dragon can confuse a stack while the other can cast lightning on it, and it will never move on step until either it dies or the dragons run out of mana. With the summon spell, if you want to have a super big stack of one particularly useful creature, spread it into empty stacks in an army, increasing the chances of getting just one of those. If your really desperate, you could take out all the possibly summoned creatures except the one you want to hoard.
