why heroes?
I am curious about all you cool people here and seeing how we need something to discuss other then H&R.....
Why do you play heroes? What is it about this game that keeps you playing year after year? It can't be the strategic elements of the game as there are more strategic games out there, can it?
What type of game do you like? The quick, hard, fast games that are over in 3 weeks? Or the long games filled with exploring? Or do you just play for the glorius rush that comes with a hard fought win? Just something that passes the time or a get together with close friends? I know that some of you have already answered this question before but I'm curious. And I hope you will reply. :-)
I'm hoping that some of the more famous people here can answer this question. Zud, Pandora, Yawacko, Maxym, Jinxer, etc.

famous people? lol
Why I keep playin Heroes, lol good question. I do love this game, in the past few weeks I have d/l a couple old games, Kings Bounty, Masters of Magic, I played with em, and burnt out on em in a few days (KB mainly for nostalgic purposes)
Heroes is always exciting for me. I love the long time building up a hero (prolly more than anything else) I also love clearin a map (I still cant stop myself from trying to clear everything b4 going for more strategic moves like hitting middle faster of going for my opponent quickly)
What Castle do I get to play, what fun heroes do I get to choose from (or trying to pick the best hero from a bunch of crappy ones) what skills are available, What arts do I have and the secondary towns make every game so unique even on the same maps.
If I want to win more I think I need to change my tactics but I enjoy my style of play and do OK recordwise I guess. When the points and just winning become paramount, I think my enjoyment of the game will be sacrificed a bit
I also think I come online and keep playing because of the good people I have met and very much enjoy games with online (even heroes some of the time)
mebe I just keep playin to bide my time till Shae comes Atlanta
Dunno if this answers much of the question, but what the heck, hehe

Once upon a time....
Yawacko and i had a 486 computer that was about one step above a calculator in the computer family, and one of our friends used to bring us rips of games he'd find to see if we could actually play them- and one fateful day he brought us HeroesII. We had no clue how to play it at first, but it took no time to catch on and become completely enthralled, it sucked having to wait like 30 mins for the comps to do their turn tho! When we finally got a real comp, was just about the time of Homm3 and when it was finally released we bought it the first day out, hehe
And so it began, maybe there's subliminal messages in the game telling us to never quit? i can't say for sure, but i can say that Yawacko and i both have never had any such game exact such a powerful hold on us! For myself, the love of the game comes from seeing each new game as a story. And i love that tho i've been playing since the games release i'm still learning new things about it all the time.
and of course, i love that it's turn based, hope that never ever changes!
Beyond the game, another huge factor for me is the people, ive made some great friends online, and it's all thanks to ToH. Its amazing to me to think how a lil ol' game has the power to make people who would never have met, from opposite ends of the earth become dear friends who chat every day.

...simply because it is the Best Strategy Game Ever...
Famous people eh? I just found a neat quote that describes a lot of us accurately
But back to the question. I really do think it is the best strat ever. I have played a number of them and very few can hold my attention for long, not one for as long as HoMM did and some of them have not even made their way out of the box since i bought them moths or years ago.
I'll still play other games once in a while, and they are enjoyable for a brief period of time, while thye are new. But HoMM with its multitude of options and therefore unlimited replayability is still the king. I do get sick of maps, and even whole styles of play, but with so many players in TOH you can always try something new.
Also the quality of TOH and HoMM players in general is exceptional. It is a real pleasure to turn on your comp, play a game and have a fun and even sometimes meaningful conversation. And i can't underestimate the fact that by playing this game together we are becoming friends. Hey I have been back from the Arctic for 2 weeks now and i still have not played a game, I did spend 2 evenings just talking to people i met on the zone, and who were genuinely glad to see me back (hehe just wait till I take their points j/k)
I guess the replayability, the quality and amount of strategic and tactical thinking that goes into each game, exceptional balance in almost every aspect of the game combined with great people playing it is what makes Heroes of Might and Magic suach a long lasting hit.*

You bunch of liars are ignoring the real reason we all love this game.
You, me, and pretty much everyone else who plays this game fantasize that we're powerfull wizards and warriors leading our armies out to conquer the world. Vesuvius himself once said that a lot of his ideas for tournaments/clans come from his dreaming about this game at night. Heck, I'll even go so far as to admit I make crackling electric sounds everytime I cast lightning bolt on an opponent.
We're all a bunch of fantasy/sci-fi nerds - it's that simple.

The thing that makes me play HOMM3, and that made me play HOMM2 and HOMM1, is how enveloping the atmosphere is. Games like Civ2 can't really draw you in as well as the HOMM series. I humm the background music all the time, just because it's so infectious. MY favcorite is the Dungeon music.
doo da da da da da DEE da da da, ... doo do da dee-oh, dee doo do da doo do da dadadada dadadada-
Okay, I'll stop. Another great thing is the specialization. The game has 144 heroes, not counting the special campaign heroes, and, ya know what? THEY'RE ALL DIFFERENT! And the monsters. There are about one hundred fifty of them, but they're all differentiated enough that I never confuse any of them, besides a few base/upgrade things.

Homm
I got addicted since HOMM1, a very very very long time ago............
And I really like all these fantasy creatures with cool effects and graphics and of course the startegy. And warlock was my favorite since then. Then came Heroes 2, when I saw it I started to panic, it looked so great compared to HOMM1, first me & friends though bone dragon was best (because necro was the last town from selection screen) also I was able to forsee HOMM 2 with new new necro castle with ghosts, skels (that would cost 80 and i was right), and zombies. Anyway I really liked the graphics in H2. And about 2 yrs later my firend just bought H3 and we got really excited and thought its very complex and new and straight away figured that the dungeon is warlock and always played it.
And thats what I especially like the graphics and the fantasy. phew thats all

HOMM is 2nd only to CIV for me. Games I`ve also enjoyed are MOO, Baldur`s Gate; from another era: The first Oda Nobunaga, first Warlords and first Railroad Tycoon; since I have a fast comp: AoE.

Thanks Everbody!
I appreciate all of the replies made so far.
Frank, it's nice to see you on the board. You were one of the famous Homm players that I was hoping to see answer.
I'm sorry I forgot to mention you.
Reanimator, I'm afraid I'm gonna have to agree with Pan, I'm not a sci-fi/fantasy nerd! I'm a rivothead first and foremost. Although I admit that I walk a fine line and come close to being a fantasy freak.
Zonekill, good answer! Sometimes we have to go out and create oppertunities that will allow us to become something more. But until they come up there is always H3.
The reason I play Homm3 is because it is a family thing. With many close family members that all actively play this game it is something binds us together. Instead of discussing sports at the dinner table we all to often discuss games and people we have played. Maybe this is pathetic but it helps all of us grow closer, creating a bond that will last over the years. There is not too many things better then the games that go on between competing siblings. They are rare and precious and make up for some of the best memories I have.
Zud, you guys are famous in the toh community and even more so for me as I have been hearing stories about you, Pan, Yawacko, Antal, Bpanik, Great_pk, Frank and many, many more, for years now.
Anyways, I hope to see more people drop by and give us their reasons for playing this amazing game.

Why Heroes?
All the good comments have been used but I will add a couple of minor points......
Heroes is the only game I have ever played that is ultimately replayable. You can master a particular map to the point of invincibility, seemingly, and suddenly a good player comes along and kicks your butt because he/she found an advantage you didnt see, a tactic you didnt know, use of an Arty combination that is brilliant.
You can play a map with one town/hero combination and its so easy you decide the map is no good. try that same map the next day with a different town/hero combination and lose terribly. The tiniest difference in mine needs or guardians, Hero selection, random artifacts, or luck, plain and simply, can make a major difference in the outcome of the game. Thats what makes a good map and creates good players.
Heroes is a game of brute force, resource management and luck.. but it is mastered (or nearly) only by those able to extract the most from the least. The minimalist who can win with seemingly nothing.
The best players "push the envelope" all the time, these guys first tried the Master Gremlin rush, chaining of heroes, Artifact hiding before the battle, beating Solmyr or Deemer with Logistics or Resistance or Offence or Tactics (or whatever) Heroes. These guys make you better at the game!
If you make too many rules and remove too many possibilities from the game you are actually REDUCING your chance to beat the best players, LIMITING your learning potential and DETRACTING from the Heroes experience. If you want to play for "Funzies", thats great!!!!! Make all the rules you want and have fun!! But dont consider it a "Rated" game..... It's two different things and there is room for both.
